(AP) - Neil Smith was abruptly fired after less than a month as general manager of the Islanders and replaced by New York goalie Garth Snow, who retired to take over the posi tion. Islanders owner Charles Wang said Smith told him he had difficulty working within the team’s revamped front office. Smith was something of a surprise choice when he returned to the NHL fol lowing a six-year absence and replaced Mike Milbury on June 8. Smith’s replace ment was even more of a shock. Snow, who went 4-13-1 last season as the backup to top Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro, will be in charge of making trades and will oversee the pro scouting department. Leafs sign Peca to 1-year deal TORONTO (AP) - The Toronto Maple Leafs signed veteran center Michael Peca to a one-year deal worth $2.5 million. The 32-year-old Toronto native earned $3.99 million last season with the Edmonton Oilers. After a slow start, he recorded six goals and five assists in 24 playoff games. Peca had nine goals and 14 assists in 71 regular-season games. Hurricanes acquire Walter RALEIGH, N.C. Teams are still learning his tenden cies, and I’ve seen too many one-season wonders to get excited. I can remember when an ERA over 3.5 was considered bad. Nobody seems to be talk ing about how many pitchers who allow more than four earned runs a game are con sidered quality hurlers. Let’s talk about the bull pen. Atlanta relievers have 20 saves out of 40 opportuni ties. It’s good that Atlanta is racking up football scores in its wins because the Braves will need a margin of at least two or three runs to insure a victory. f I RECOGHIZE It AG A GPECTATOR GPORT. The new owners have set a 12-month deadline to reach a new arena deal with Seattle officials - something the previous owners didn't accomplish in two years. After that, the new owners gain the option to move the team to Oklahoma. The Basketball Club of Seattle, head ed by Starbucks Corp. chairman Howard Schultz, will sell the teams for $350 million to the Professional Basketball Club LLC, headed by Oklahoma City businessman Clay Bennett. Barbara trainer encouraged KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. (AP) -. Barbara trainer Michael Matz was encouraged by the colt's recent stabil ity in his health, though he noted the Kentucky Derby winner’s condition could still turn any time. Matz said Barbaro vet Dean Richardson told him the colt had another restful night and his vital signs were normal. My Muffin also takes exception to my view of the Braves chances, and I realize that I’m blowing any oppor tunity I may have for press passes, if the Braves front office even knows I exist, but I can’t with any honesty say that Atlanta will make the playoffs. I still expect the pitching staff to break down. Seven pitchers from Atlanta’s 40-man roster are on the disabled list. Four of them, Blain Boyer, Kyle Davies, John Foster and Mike Hampton are on the 60-day list and are probably gone for the season. Chris Reitsma, John Thomson and Phil Stockman man the 15-day disabled list. When, if, Thomson returns, he will bring back his 2-7 record and his 5.68 ERA. Stockman pitched only four e-mail Cleatsmail@aol com Richardson said both of Barbara's hind leg casts were changed a day earlier, and he was pleased with how the colt performed under light sedation in his sling. While the colt has shown some encouraging signs the last five days, the odds of Barbara’s full recovery frotn a severe case of laminitis and a recon structed right hind leg are really no better than they were a week ago. Roddick beats Delgado INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Andy Roddick won his first singles match since losing in the third round of Wimbledon, beat ing Paraguay's Ramon Delgado 6-3, 6-2 in the second round of the RCA Championships. Robby Ginepri rallied to beat Alejandro Falla 4-6,7-5, 7-5, with an instant replay challenge overturning a key point. WWams returns, wins MASON, Ohio (AP) - Playing in her first tournament in six months, Serena Williams beat Anastasia Myskina 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open. Williams, who has been bothered by a chronic left knee injury, chose the Tier 111 event for her first match since losing in the third round of the Australian Open. In an earlier match, fifth-seeded Jelena Jankovic advanced to the second round with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ukraine’s innings; thus, his 2.25 ERA means nothing, and Reitsma has a frightening 8.68 earned run average with four blown saves out of 12 opportuni ties. , I can hear the cry from the wasteland. It isn’t John the Baptist but John Schuerholz calling for bullpen help. I hope the Braves win the pennant, but until the front office acknowledges its pitch ing woes, which Schuerholz hasn’t, then don’t expect them to be more than 82- 82 after the first week in October.
