LOUIS - With the Braves crushing homers at a prolific and historic pace this week, it’s fitting that today marks the anniversary of baseball’s consummate home run milestone. As a Brewer, Hank Aaron hit his 755th and final home run 30 years ago today, July 20, 1976 at Milwaukee’s County Stadium. Put this in perspec tive: With eight home runs already this month entering Wednesday, Andruw Jones and Chipper Jones have com bined to hit 671 home runs in 23 1/2 seasons in the majors. Aaron hit 755 in 23 sea sons. He averaged 37 homers a season for nearly a quarter century. “It’s hard to believe, to be honest with you,” Chipper said. “That a guy could play at that level for that long, it’s unbelievable. We as players now think about playing the game 24, 25 years, and not too many of us can fathom that.” Jones said a player such as New York’s Alex Rodriguez might one day reach Aaron’s plateau, but it won’t carry the same weight as the initial bar set. “I think Hank Aaron’s American League EAST W L PCT GB HOME ROAD RS RA STRK LlO 57 36 .613 - 31-13 26-23 508 445 Won 3 6-4 55 37 .598 1.5 31-18 24-19 516 427 Lost 1 8-2 52 42 .553 5.5 32-20 20-22 502 457 Lost 2 5-5 44 53 .454 15 27-25 17-28 460 532 Lost 2 5-5 39 56 .411 19 22-20 17-36 396 498 Lost 6 1-9 CENTRAL W L PCT GB HOME ROAD RS RA STRK LlO 63 31 .670 - 30-16 33-15 489 359 Won 1 7-3 58 35 .624 4.5 33-14 25-21 541 447 Lost 1 4-6 53 40 .570 9.5 36-11 17-29 461 414 Won 6 7-3 42 52 .447 21 23-23 19-29 516 482 Won 1 3-7 32 62 .340 31 19-23 13-39 422 563 Lost 3 2-8 WEST W L PCT GB HOME ROADRS RA STRK LIO 50 45 .526 - 24-22 26-23 421 419 Won 2 5-5 49 46 .516 1 25-25 24-21 477 457 Won 2 6-4 48 46 .511 1.5 24-24 24-22 448 439 Lost 1 8-2 45 50 .474 5 24-24 21-26 449 446 Won 1 3-7 National League EAST W L PCT GB HOME ROADRS RA STRK LlO 56 38 .596 - 27-18 29-20 506 433 Lost 1 6-4 45 50 .474 11.5 21-23 24-27 508 485 Lost 1 8-2 43 50 .462 12.5 21-26 22-24 460 489 Won 1 5-5 42 51 .452 13.5 22-23 20-28 433 450 Won 1 5-5 40 56 .417 17 20-24 20-32 434 499 Lost 1 3-7 CENTRAL W L PCT GB HOME ROADRS RA STRK LlO 53 41 .564 - 31-19 22-22 477 463 Won 1 8-2 50 45 .526 3.5 25-23 25-22 479 489 Won 1 6-4 46 49 .484 7.5 28-22 18-27 435 454 Won 1 4-6 46 50 .479 8 29-20 17-30 444 514 Lost 2 3-7 36 57 .387 16.5 16-28 20-29 379 475 Lost 1 6-4 34 62 .354 20 24-26 10-36 442 508 Won 1 5-5 WEST W L PCT GB HOME ROADRS RA STRK LlO 50 44 .532 - 25-28 25-16 435 422 Lost 1 6-4 48 47 .505 2.5 26-23 22-24 444 449 Won 2 5-5 47 47 .500 3 23-25 24-22 463 471 Won 1 7-3 47 48 .495 3.5 28-18 19-30 484 454 Lost 1 3-7 45 49 .479 5 22-22 23-27 444 433 Lost 1 1-9 I CAM LOOK ?m TME /) UGLY, VIOIEMT ACTION, AMP ) APPRECIATE IT AE> A PHYSICAL 7 TEST OF TMEGE GUYE>. Hank Aaron is the ultimate,” Chipper said. “Say A-Rod breaks the record eight or 10 years from now. Twenty years after he does it, people are going to say he did it in the steroid era, even though A-Rod may be a guy who’s never looked upon as a user. He’s still going to be linked to this era. “They’ll come up with something - juiced ball, expansion, something to help give credence to the fact that it’s not legitimate.” Andruw Jones said he appreciates Aaron’s final mark for various reasons, including the racial oppres sion the Mobile, Ala., native was forced to face on virtual ly a daily basis in the socially backward O6os and O7os. “I never experienced stuff like that, but it’s nice to hear what he went through, play ing baseball in the states and a game that was more of a white sport,” said Andruw, a native of Curacao. “For him to go out there and do the stuff he did, it took a lot of concentration and willing ness to put a lot of stuff behind you.” Although Barry Bonds seems to be threatening and Rodriguez might one day get close, Andruw thinks 755 - e-mail Cleatsmail@aol com (19). Schuerholz was scurrying around the visitors’ clubhouse, some times conferring with man ager Bobby Cox to get his input.
