Davidson, a young man
with a keen interest in
family history, said that
he had thought of giv
ing the portrait to the
court house because his
ancestor was also the
first county judge, but
after seeing the museum
facilities at the Board of
Education building, he
decided it should be the
permanent home of the
portrait.

William Henry Norwood,
who was the sheriff of
Houston County, and
he is related to the late
Gen. Courtney Hodges,
whose mother was a
Norwood.
One of the first local
people who showed up
for a talk with Davidson
after the Board of
Education meeting was
John Houser of Perry,
whose roots in Perry also
go back to the founding
days.
Houser explained that
his grandmother was a
Norwood, and joked that
the Norwoods, includ
ing one character known
as “Bull of the Woods”
Norwood, were known
for being temperamental,
and that in his family,
when someone got angry,
the saying was, “That’s

Charles Irby Shelton,
one of Perry’s most
knowledgeable historians,
was also on hand, and
provided more photo
graphs of the old build
ings and some informa
tion on the moving of the
old school to two nearby
locations.
He said that the main
building was pulled
across the street by one
mule while a small sec
tion remained in use for
classrooms for several
more years and then was
moved to become part of
a nearby home.
Davidson said that
many of the photographs
in his possession will be
used by Elbe Loudermilk
in her forthcoming his
tory of Perry.
