Suspect arrested
after explosion
POWDER SPRINGS (AP)
- A man who was wanted
for kidnapping was arrest
ed after an explosion at his
house as police were waiting
to question him.
Athony Everett Morgan
was alone in the home and
tried to commit suicide early
Thursday because of kid
napping and false imprison
ment charges he faced in
Atlanta, Cobb County Fire
Department spokesman Dan
Dupree said.
“He apparently discon
nected a gas line in the base
ment in an attempt at sui
cide,” Dupree said.
The incident began
Wednesday evening when
Morgan, 39, met his girl
friend in College Park to
exchange some paperwork,
according to Cobb Police
Department spokesman Cpl.
Dana Pierce.
During the exchange,
Morgan became agitated and
allegedly made his girlfriend
come back to his Powder
Springs home.
Pierce said it appears
Morgan verbally and physi
cally assaulted his girlfriend,
whose name Pierce did not
release. The girlfriend was
able to call a relative, who in
turn called another relative
to pick her up. Once away
from the house, the woman
called police.
An officer was dispatched
to monitor Morgan’s house,
Pierce said. But as police
were waiting to receive
Morgan’s arrest warrant,
the house exploded around
1:30 a.m.
The explosion was strong
enough to blow off the base
ment garage doors, vinyl sid
ing on the rear of the house
and a front window.
Dupree said the cause of
ignition has not been con
firmed, but investigators
suspect the basement’s
water heater was the trig
ger. Dupree said Morgan had
disconnected the gas line to
his dryer so gas was flowing

Man charged with
son's murder
MACON (AP) - A father
has been charged with mur
der in the death of his 6-
month-old son.
Rodredrez Taylor Sr.,
26, had been charged with
child cruelty in May after
his son, Rodredrez Taylor
Jr., stopped breathing and
was taken to the hospital,
authorities said.
At the time, a doctor said
the child’s head injuries
appeared to be signs of shak
en-baby syndrome, accord
ing to a police report.
The child cruelty charge
was upgraded to murder
after the child died Thursday,
Macon police spokeswoman
Sgt. Melanie Hofmann said.
Taylor was arrested short
ly before 8 p.m. Thursday,
Hofmann said.
A May arrest warrant
accuses Taylor of letting the
child fall to the floor and
hit his head in their home.
Taylor initially told police he
did not know why the child
had stopped breathing.
According to a police
report, Taylor told authori
ties he had stepped outside
with the door ajar to smoke
a cigarette. He said that
when he came back inside,
the baby was slumped in his
baby carrier. He told police
he performed CPR on the
baby, the report stated.
But faced with information
about his son’s condition, he
changed his story and said
he accidentally dropped the
child on his head, according
to the warrant.
Hospital exams discovered
his son had several bone
fractures, some predating
the fall, according to the
warrant.

Charges dismissed
in threat case
COLUMBUS (AP) - A
Saudi national who had
been accused of threaten
ing to bomb an airplane has
been released from custody
after authorities dismissed
charges against him.
The discharge order came
Thursday, one day after
Saleh A 1 Suwailem appeared
before a federal grand jury
in Macon, according to his
attorney, David Roberts.
“The jury needed to hear
the whole story before they
made a decision, and they
did,” Roberts said. “He said
the wrong thing at the wrong
time.”
A 1 Suwailem, a legal resi
dent of the United States,
was accused of threatening
to use a bomb after inter
viewing for an interpreter
job at Fort Benning in June,
referring to the plane that
would have brought him
back to his home in Boise,
Idaho.
“Any investigation or pros
ecution that may have been
pending against Saleh A 1
Suwailem has been conclud
ed, and we do not anticipate
any further action against
him at the present time,”
said G.F. Peterman 111, act
ing U.S. attorney for the
Middle District of Georgia.
Peterman declined to
confirm the Wednesday
grand jury meeting. He also
declined to say why his office
chose to file a motion to dis
miss the charge of making a
terroristic threat against an
airplane. The charge could
have carried a sentence of
up to 20 years.
FBI Agent Todd M. Kalish
testified in an initial hear
ing in U.S. District Court in
Columbus that A 1 Suwailem
made the threat while
drinking beer with fellow
interpreter candidates at a
gazebo near housing on Fort
Benning after he was told he
would not get an interpret
ing job in Iraq.
A 1 Suwailem, 45, was
arrested June 7.
