STRIKE

From there, Meredith,
who pitched nine innings
in Game 2 the day before,
threw five more frames
to qualify for the win. He
had four strikeouts, but his
biggest problem would be
figuring out Stokes.
In the bottom of the third,
Meredith issued a walk with
two outs to bring Stokes to
the plate. Stokes sent the
baseball over the left-field
fence, and it was a 7-3 Tigers
lead.
To respond, Varnadoe
earned his second RBI on
his second hit in the top of
the fourth. Micah Smith led
off with a double down the
right-field line and scored
on Varnadoe’s one-out single
(8-3). This came off Stokes,
who pitched from the third
inning on in relief of starter
Adam Thompson.
Stokes had five strikeouts
in his seven innings, and
appeared to have given up
another hit to Smith and
another run in the fifth.
However, Smith, batting
with two outs and a run
ner on second, was denied a
safety on a hit-and-run play
as the Eagles successfully
appealed that Smith missed
first base on his way to sec
ond.
On the heels of that call,
the Eagles stormed back on
offense with a two-run home
fifth. Jones had a deep pop
up fall fair inside the right
field line. He scored on a
two-out double by Stokes.
Hickman then jumped on
his first offering for an RBI
single up the middle to make
it an 8-5 game.
The Tigers turned to for
mer Westfield pitcher Nick
Shelton, and he earned the
save by finishing out the last
four innings. It started with
a perfect sixth and a score
less seventh despite two
walks.
In the top of the sev
enth, the Tigers picked up
a gift run after infield hits
from Alex Blain and Jason
Varnadoe. With two outs and
a full count on his batter,
Stokes made a throw to first
base with no one there to
cover. That made the score
9-5.
The Eagles got the
unearned run back in the
home eighth on a two-out
error after hits by Josh Ayers
and William Alexander load
ed the bases.
Blain, who played with
Irwin at Houston County
High, had an RBI single in
the top of the ninth to score
Simpson after a leadoff dou
ble. Blain also caught the
last out at first base to com
plete a double play.

ATHENS - Dave Bliss, a
Georgia basketball player
delivered one of the most elo
quent tributes Monday to the
late Kevin Brophy, his team
mate and close friend who
was killed in a car accident
last Thursday.
“Broph was one of those
rare people in life who was
a leader of men,” Georgia’s
center said, speaking to the
nearly 400 people who packed
Georgia’s chapel for a memo
rial service.
Bliss, Brophy’s roommate,
was part of contingent of cur
rent and former teammates
who attended the service.
The nearly two-hour service
left some of Georgia’s most
hardened basketball players
in tears. The video showed
clips of Brophy’s career-high
19 points against Vanderbilt
on Jan. 22, 2005, when the
Bulldogs captured their first
SEC win in a season that
ended with an 8-20 record.
Brophy replaced an injured
Stukes in the starting lineup
that game. The memories of
his breakout performance
were still fresh for Stukes.
“He was so nervous, but I
told him that I’d be right over
here (on the bench) talking to
him,” Stukes said. “He went
out and played the game I
knew he could play.”
