Birthday party held
for 'Mama Louise'
MACON - A woman who
never recorded a hit record
or penned a popular song was
honored Saturday for her
contributions to Georgia’s
musical legacy.
Macon restaurateur
Louise Hudson, known by
most everyone as “Mama
Louise,” was feted with a
birthday bash that included
a musical performance from
Gregg Allman, recognition
from the Georgia Music Hall
of Fame and a tribute from
U.S. Rep. Jim Marshall, D-
Ga. Allman told the 500
or so guests who filled the
Armory Ballroom in down
town Macon that Mama
Louise’s vittles served up at
the H&H Restaurant helped
his now-famous band sur
vive its early years.
“There’s a very good possi
bility, a very good possibility,
that without Mama Louise
there wouldn’t be an Allman
Brothers Band,” Allman said
from the stage.
Lisa Love of the Georgia
Music Hall of Fame and
Museum in Macon pre
sented a plaque recognizing
Mama Louise for “her role
as a longtime friend, sup
porter and nurturer of'the
many musicians and patrons
who have enjoyed warmth,
generosity and a satisfying
meal...”
Marshall delivered a proc
lamation from Washington
bestowing the honor “Lady
Mama Louise.”
Mama Louise, a woman
of few words, accepted gifts
and accolades while seated
with her feet dangling over
the edge of the stage.
“Thank you,” she said
simply. “Thank you all for
coming.”
She then took her seat
front and center for musical
performances from Bonnie
Bramlett of the 1960 s super
group Delaney & Bonnie
& Friends, country music
star Lee Roy Parnell and a

Five charged with
assisting fugitive
FAULKVILLE (MNS)
- Five south Effingham
County residents were
charged Sunday in connec
tion with assisting a South
Carolina man wanted for
armed robbery and kidnap
ping, authorities said.
Charged with hindering
the apprehension or pun
ishment of a criminal were
Patrick Wayne Hackworth,
Leslie Louise McFearin,
Nicole Elizabeth Smith,
Franklin Daniel Taylor and
Amanda Joy Wright, Sheriff
Jimmy McDuffie said.
Felony charges were
filed against the suspects
a day after deputies found
Matthew Coy Taylor of
Myrtle Beach, S.C. hiding
at a house in Faulkville.
Deputies stormed the house
after South Carolina law
men called Effingham about
Taylor, who is wanted for
armed robbery and three
counts of kidnapping by
force, Capt. Mike Bohannon
said.
Bohannon said the five sus
pects were charged because
they knew or had reason
able grounds for knowing
Taylor was wanted on felony
charges, according to inves
tigators. The offense is pun
ishable by one to five years
in prison, he added.
Deputies and Bloomingdale
police spotted Taylor at the
house Saturday after talking
to South Carolina authori
ties. The sheriffs special
operations team raided the
address, Bohannon said.
Reports that Taylor might
be armed were unfounded
but deputies said he resisted

Woman's body
recovered
GAINESVILLE (AP)
- The body of an 18-year
old woman, believed to have
intentionally jumped into
Lake Lanier, has been recov
ered, authorities said.
Hall County Sheriff’s div
ers found the body of Quyen
Thu Hua on Monday, Hall
County Sheriffs Maj. Jeff
Strickland said. The sheriff’s
office said Hua was from
Forest Park but her death
notice listed a Gainesville
residence.
Strickland said fam
ily members saw her jump
into the lake from a bridge
Sunday evening.
“Family members knew of
her intentions and arrived
as she jumped,” he said.
Rescue divers tried to
locate her late Sunday but
canceled the search because
of the “extreme danger
involved in nighttime div
ing,” Strickland said.
Dive team members also
resumed searching in the
lake Monday for Marc Lee
Webb, 38, of Forsyth County.
But searchers had to stop for
the day after searching eight
hours and as bad weather
neared.
Webb was last seen fall
ing from a Waveßunner on
July 8 after he hit a large
wave near Holiday Marina
in Buford. Previous dive
team searches have been •
hampered by the lake’s deep
water and by uncertainty
over where he disappeared.

Former candidates,
officials take sides
By Brandon Larrabee
Morris News Service
ATLANTA - The pace of
endorsements in primary
runoffs quickened consider
ably Monday, as elected offi
cials and former candidates
chose sides ahead of a sec
ond round of party balloting
Aug. 8.
Both Democratic candi

file endorsements, with
former Human Resources
Commissioner Jim Martin
gettingthe backingofAtlanta
Mayor Shirley Franklin and
former Sen. Greg Hecht of
Jonesboro picking up the
support of a former rival,
Sen. Steen Miles of Decatur.
Miles said Hecht, who
finished second behind
Martin in last week’s pri
mary with 36 percent of the
vote, was the party’s best
chance to keep the lieuten
ant governor’s seat, which
Mark Taylor is' leaving to
run for governor. Taylor is
currently the highest-rank
ing Democrat in the state.
“If we don’t field the right
person ... then we’re going to
as Democrats be very, very
sorry,” she said.
-JUiles asked her support
ers to follow her lead.
“Vote for the little guy with
the big hear who can get big
things done for Georgia,”
she said.
That came on the heels
of Franklin’s endorsement
of Martin, who carried 41
percent of the initial vote.
Franklin is a popular figure
in the state’s largest city.
“Jim is a Democrat run
ning for lieutenant governor
who can win in November,”
Franklin said. “And when

Jim wins, we win.”
Franklin also took a swipe
at negative advertising. The
Hecht campaign has distrib
uted mail pieces slamming
Martin for 72 deaths while
he oversaw the state’s child
welfare system and savag
ing a proposal Martin spon
sored in the Legislature that
would have created different
classes of sexual assault.
“I think it’s important for
all of us to remember that
people vote for someone,”
she said.
Meanwhile, GOP secretary
of state candidate Karen
Handel, chairwoman of the
Fulton County Commission,
picked up the support of the
third- and fourth-place fin
ishers in last week’s first
round. Handel drew nearly
44 percent of the vote last
Tuesday to about 33 percent
for Sen. Bill Stephens of
Canton. Her campaign noted
that Handel, 2002 GOP
nominee Charlie Bailey and
businessman Eric Martin
combined for almost 70 per
cent of the vote last week.
“She is a real conservative
leader with the highest char
acter,” Bailey, who won near
ly 14 percent of the vote, said
in a news release issued by
Handel’s campaign. “Karen
will bring leadership, hon
esty and integrity to the
Republican ticket and the
office of Secretary of State.”
Eric Martin drew about 10
percent. '
“Karen Handel has put
forth a plan that will great
ly improve the office of
Secretary of State,” he said.
“She also will be a strong
addition to our Republican
ticket this fall with Governor
Sonny Perdue.”
