WRALL 11-12-year-olds remain confident in state title chances By MATTHEW BROWN Journal Sports Writer Middle Georgia isn’t the only part of the state that’s been hit with severe inclement weather in the past several days. In the city of Augusta, where a few of the state’s best 11-12 Little League baseball teams have gathered to deter mine the 2006 state champions, rain showers put a damper on the schedule of tournament games. So much so that the Warner Robins American club had to wait until Wednesday to try for the top seed from its pool in the state championship bracket. Even with the outcome of Warner Robins American’s last pool game against Oconee American (originally Summer conditioning - T*** F‘£ C* ■» if's. <*» * z Z'" k,||. m inr"-“ ■■ *‘'lTr **■■■■■■■■ Z L ./A/ ' . ■»- - - & sis Stir lp*i i* mm ENI/Gary Harmon Northside - per the norm - has had a busy summer of voluntary workouts and conditioning in preparation for the official start of team practices next week. The second game for Warner Robins American didn’t look promising on the field as Buckhead had a 1-0 lead at the end of regulation play. But Buckhead was guilty of a rules vio lation that one would think would be protested by its own fan base. “They didn’t play one of their bat ters ... he didn’t have a legal at-bat,” said Hattaway. “It was explained to us at district, and it was explained to us before the state tournament. You have to get your subs in. They’re real strict about that rule.” As a result, Warner Robins American was awarded the win 6-0. “(Buckhead) had a good team,” See STATE, page 2B BGCTION 1B Fears neb third at challenge From staff reports Lacey Fears couldn’t quite hangon. The Bonaire golfer shot a 42 the sec ond and final day of the GSGA Junior Sectional Challenge Match, played Monday and Tuesday at Fields Ferry Golf Club in Calhoun. That gave her a two day finish of 83 and third place - following a tie-breaker with sec ond-place finisher Caitlin Watts of LaGrange. Judy Name of Buford, who was third after the first day, shot a 39 and won the division - 13-and-under. Fears did have a bit of the “last laugh,” how ever, as she won the long drive competition held later that day as well as the putting competition. She drove the ball 225 yards and rolled it 17 times while putting. Another Bonaire golfer, Tyler Erickson, stayed the course and finished fifth. He shot a 75 the first day, and was in fifth, and then a 74 the second. His combined score then was 149 and his overall finish was fifth. Collin Ho of Albany, who led after the first day, won that division - the boys 14-15-year-olds. The venue for the chal lenge match was a state wide competition that brought together the top performers from the sum mer-long GSGA Junior Sectional Program, which was founded in 1974. Participants earned the opportunity to compete and represent their sec tion - Fears and Erickson were both representing the Middle section - in the tournament by accu mulating points in their section’s four qualifying events. Each of the seven geo graphic sections sends their top four point earn ers from each boys age division and the top two from each girls division See FEARS, page 2B Kishigian, Kennedy make cut From staff reports Thirteen golfers could feel his pain - if that were the right descriptor. That’s how many were tied with Ben Kishigian after the first day of contention at the U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifying Tuesday at Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta. All shot a 72 - one stroke over. Steven Tiley of Atlanta led the event - 54 of the 144 listed made the cut for the next day - with a score of 64 (seven under). Jon Kennedy of Hawkinsville carded a 73 (two over), whereas Chris Wolfe, also of Warner Robins, shot a 78 - four strokes short of what he needed to make the cut. The field is contending for six qualifying spots and two alternate posi tions in the 106th U.S. Amateur Championship. That is scheduled to be held at Hazeltine National Golf Club See CUT, page 2B
