4C ♦ SATURDAY, JULY 29, 2006 One door closes and another one opens This week there was big news in the world of antiques and collect ibles. Some good and some bad! The famous Hitchcock Chair Company, that has been a past topic of this column, sadly closed its doors on June 13. The Connecticut based company that had been in business for over 180 years recently auctioned off all their woodworking machin ery, warehouse and office fixtures. They also auctioned off their complete inventory of newly produced furniture. In August the Hitchcock Company trademark will be Spending quality time in Mackinac Island, Mich. Grocery Shopping: I’m seldom without houseguests at the Cable Cottage. I like hav ing my friends enjoy this magical island with me. “Laying in provisions” for these houseguests is not like back home in Georgia where ya’ll just hop into your car and head for the nearest grocery store. There is a small grocery store here on the island, but I liken it to one of those gas stations that also sells food products. Get the picture? So I, by necessity, have to get my By Matt Soergel Morris News Service MONSTER HOUSE 3 stars: Three kids check out the malignant and haunted house across the road in this computer-animated story. Children with chills on their mind should love it, though it’s so scary it could send others ducking under their seats. PG. CLERKS II 3 stars: The aging guys from Kevin Smith’s 1994 indie smash are back, still engaging in ear-blisteringly raunchy conversation and Dhilarious pop-culture commentating c even as they as fret about growing older. It’s more sen timental than the original, with an honest-to-goodness romance (thanks to radiant Rosario Dawson). But the good news for fans: It’s still plenty juvenile. R. LADY IN THE WATER 2 stars: M. Night Shyamalan’s newest is one of the nut ties movies you’ll ever see, though it’s funnier and more watchable than you might think even as the story, about a strange woman from a parallel world, spins way out of control. Has a couple of horror jolts, but it’s chief ly a mystical and earnest fairy tale.PG-13. YOU, ME AND DUPREE 1 1/2 stars: Owen Wilson is amusing in spots in this good natured comedy, playing a roommate who won’t leave RICH From page 1C he is, froze, eyes wide. “Pick it up?” “Don’t worry,” I replied, brushing him aside. “I’ll do it.” I didn’t even stop to have my morning coffee. Trailing at least 30 feet behind me, Pearce followed me to the garage where I grabbed a shovel and headed to the porch. I stopped when I got to the top of the steps. “Oh my gosh! Look at all this blood!” Apparently, some less hospitable crea ture had bitten off part of the possum’s tail. The sad eyed baby had dragged blood all over the porch formerly known as pretty. I knelt down. “Oh, you poor sweet baby,” I cooed. sold to the highest bidder as well. Let’s hope that the trademark will live on and still repre sent high quality American made furnish ings and doesn’t go overseas. Now that produc tion has ceased, real Hitchcock furnishings will increase in value. I was actually in Cincinnati a few weeks ago when the groceries somewhere else, and I refer to that as “going abroad.” The boat ride to St. Ignace where my car, needed for the trip to the grocery, is parked for the summer is about 20 wonderful minutes. While on “the main land,” I load up on grocer ies - making certain to for get NOTHING as it is not convenient to zip back to the grocery and get what I forgot - fresh fish, pastries (the edible ones) and sundry items needed to run a house with guests in it. Everything is packed in FLICK PICKS the home of his newlywed friends (bland Matt Dillon and Kate Hudson). But the humor never catches fire - - it keeps getting doused by goopy sentimentality, com plete with sensitive acoustic guitars on the soundtrack. It’s no Wedding Crashers, that’s for sure. PG-13. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST 2 stars: There’s one scene, featur ing Johnny Depp as a giant shish kebab, that’s a zesty chunk of comic genius. The rest of the movie? You do get your money’s worth of motley pirates, sea monsters and duels, but it’s overdone c way too long, too frantic, too dark and nowhere near as charming or funny as that wonderful first one. PG-13. SUPERMAN RETURNS 3 1/2 stars: Planes fall from the sky, fire comes up from below and a very bad man attacks the planet. Brandon Routh plays the most power ful character in movie his tory with a casual freedom, serious and intense with out being angry. (Robert McGinty, The Times- Union) PG-13. CLICK 3 stars: You’ll get plenty of everything Adam Sandler is known for, but you’ll also find a heartwarm ing lesson about priorities. (Erin Trauth, The Times- Union) PG-13. “You’re so precious. You need to go home.” The animal control offi cer had warned me that the possum would probably play dead but she didn’t. She allowed herself to be coaxed right onto my shovel as Pearce folded his arms, threw his head back and laughed. “I’d give anything if I had a picture of this,” he called as I carried the sweet little possum back to her woods. I called Stevie and report ed the story, adding an apol ogy for teasing her about rescuing possums. “Oh, aren’t they sweet?” she asked softly. “Yes! Yes, they are. I wish I could have kept her for a pet.” So, now I’m thinking that perhaps Stevie and I should start a non-profit for the preservation of possums. announcement was made that the famous Rookwood Pottery Company molds and trademarks had been pur chased and production will begin again. The great thing about this story is that Arthur Townley, a retired dentist living in Michigan, rescued the com pany 24 years ago by buy ing all the molds and such purely to keep the company from being sold to China or other Asian markets where production would be cheap and sloppy. Townley had kept every thing stored in his base ment over the years hoping that one day he could find Hk£§L jk jjL JillinJa Falen Antiques carilynns@alltel.net banana boxes for easy trans port to the Island. After satisfying my junk food craving at McDonalds - there are no chain restau rants on Mackinac Island -I head back to the boat dock where the dock work ers offload the boxes of gro ceries from my car onto a large boat cart loaded with all manner of things des tined for the Island. The cart is pushed onto the boat, so my groceries and I have another relaxing 20-minute ride through Lake Huron and the Straits of Mackinac reading time! Someone needs to do it. After all, they’re such sweet, misunderstood animals. Very hospitable, too, if you meet the right possum. tA low Open INTERNATIONAL ARTS FRAMES 100 Suite 1 • N.
