Gatlin acknowledged he had been informed by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency that he had tested positive for testoster one or other steroids after a relay race in Kansas in April. The revelation came just two days after Tour de France champion Floyd Landis' victory was thrown into question for allegations of similar doping violations. Gatlin said he did not know why the test came back positive and promised cooperation with USADA, as it continues with the case. Gatlin's coach, Trevor Graham, told The Washington Post on Sunday that Gatlin was the victim of a setup by a massage therapist. Yankees acquire Abreu PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The New York Yankees acquired All-Star right fielder Bobby Abreu and starting pitcher Cory Lidle from the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday for four minor league prospects. A .301 career hitter, Abreu fills a major void in the lineup. New York has been without injured outfielders Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui for most of the season. The Phillies get left-hander Matt Smith, shortstop C.J. Henry - a first-round draft pick in 2005 - catcher Jesus Sanchez and right-hander Carlos Monasterios. Sutter inducted irto rtaa COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - Bruce Sutter didn’t leave baseball the way he wanted, booed relentlessly when injuries sapped his talent. That doesn’t matter any more. Eighteen years after he hung up his spikes for good, Sutter was inducted Sunday into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Sutter, who joined Hoyt Wilhelm, Rollie Fingers and Dennis Eckersley as the only relief pitchers in the Hall, was the lone player selected by the Baseball Writers Association of America. Richt faces quarterback questions By ZACHARY SPAIN The Times-Union It didn’t take long for Georgia coach Mark Richt to face questions about his choice for starting quarter back. Saturday evening at the University of North Florida’s University Center, Richt took questions for about 45 minutes from some of the 400 members of the Georgia Bulldog Club of Jacksonville in attendance. But that toughest of ques tions came not from the audience, but from Georgia broadcaster Neil “Hondo” Williamson, the M.C. of the Dawg Days Tour. Richt’s reply was lengthy he jokingly apologized later but non- committal. “I don’t know,” Richt said after Williamson asked who the starter would be. Seventeen players and executives from baseball’s segregated past, all of them deceased, were also inducted, including Essa Manley, the first woman to be so honored. __ Also inducted were J.G. Taylor Spink Award winner Tracy Ringolsby and Ford C. Frick Award winner Gene Elston. He says, Ojust tell me who it is.’ “I don’t know.” The Bulldogs have four quarterbacks on scholai - ship: senior Joe Tereshinski, sophomore Blake Barnes, redshirt freshman Joe Cox, and touted freshman Matthew Stafford. Tereshinski, who start ed Georgia’s 14-10 loss to Florida last fall at Alltel Stadium, is the only one of the bunch with experience and would appear to be the favorite. “I expected the young guys to learn enough [dur ing spring practice] so in the fall we can decide whose best suited. If we do play a young guy [at any position], it won’t be at the expense of a senior,” said Richt. “It agreed to a six-year contract with the New Orleans Saints on Saturday Saints general manager Mickey Loomis declined to discuss the financial terms on Sunday. Richt was joined in Jacksonville by gymnastics coach Suzanne Yoculan, who led the Gym Dogs to their sec ond title in a row, and Evans, who accepted the SEC All- Sports Trophy, which had been won by Florida the past 14 years. “It’s a good feeling to take this trophy away from those dreaded Gators,” Evans said. C l EATS Braves designate Sosa, send Jones back to DL ATLANTA - After a hor rendous four months that saw him go from the No. 9 NOTEBOOK R. Travis Haney Morris News Service newly acquired reliever Danys Baez, the Braves designated Sosa for assign ment Sunday. That means the club has 10 days to trade or release the struggling right-hander, who was 3-10 with a 5.46 ERA. They could also option him to the minors, but Sosa would likely decline based on service time and the prospect of pitching else where. Last year, he went 13-3 (10-3 as a starter) with a 2.55 ERA in a breakout sea son. Keeping the ball down and throwing more break ing balls to left-handers was to have been the secret to success. The luster had worn off this season. Sosa hit three home runs, but gave up 20 in just 87 1/3 innings. Opponents were hitting .298 against him - right handers .277, left-handers .327. “I look at last year as a very positive develop ment,” Atlanta general manager John Schuerholz “He did a great job for us. It hadn’t worked as well this year.” I Sunday’s Major League Linescores By The Associated Press Tanya Bay 000 200 000-2 6 0 New York 002 01010x-4 01 Shields, RLugo (8) and Paul Mussina, Farnsworth (8), MRivera (9) and Posada. When asked to comment Sunday morning, Sosa put his hand up and said, “Later.” Schuerholz said the spot was needed for Baez, who was picked up late Fr: 1 night from Los Angeles along with infielder Willy Aybar. “His was the spot that we felt was the one that had to be filled,” Schuerholz said. “He obviously hadn’t done for us what he did last year, but we’re going to give Baez a chance to join our bullpen.” NOT CHIPPER (AGAIN): The feeling is getting familiar for third baseman Chipper Jones, who was placed on the disabled list Sunday for the second time this year and fourth time in three seasons. The 34-year-old tried to play through the strained left oblique muscle that forced him to miss four games last week, but it flared up on a swing during Friday’s game. “They’re adamant about giving it the proper amount of rest and the proper amount of treatment,” he said. “It wasn’t fully healed yet. I tried to play through it, and I couldn’t.” Losing Jones comes at a rather precarious time for the Braves, who trail the Reds by 6 1/2 games in the wild-card standings with a weekend series in Cincinnati ahead. Jones, who also missed time earlier this month with a sore foot, just com pleted a 20-game hitting streak in which he batted 3 starter to the team’s closer to the pitching staffs 12th man, Jorge Sosa’s days in Atlanta are over. That’s what stings,” Jones said. “The offense was roll ing pretty good and every one was in there firing on all cylinders. I was helping lead the way. Now I’m not, and it leaves a pretty big void.” NEW ARRIVALS: Baez and Aybar joined the team Sunday morning. Aybar was thrown in the fray immediately, with manager Bobby Cox inserting the 23- year-old at third base for the DL-bound Jones. Aybar, the team’s leadoff hitter Sunday, responded with the second four-hit game of his career. He had singles in the second, fourth, fifth and ninth innings. He scored twice. Baez also debuted. He pitched a scoreless eighth inning, working around a quirky double to shallow left field by Carlos Delgado and a David Wright single. His fastball touched 95, effective to offset his 78, 79 mph breaking ball. Both players said they were caught somewhat off guard by the deal that brought them in Georgia and sent Wilson Betemit to the Dodgers. Aybar will play until Jones returns, Cox has said. Baez will serve as the primary setup man for new closer Bob Wickman. Coincidentally, Baez was the eighth-inning man in front of Wickman in Cleveland in 2001.
