Gordon, whose 35 th birthday is on Friday, has won this annual stock-car visit to the world’s most famous race track an unprecedented four times. He won the first, in 1994, and also drove his No. 24 Chevrolet to victory lane in 1998,2001 and 2004. Indy is the site of Gordon career victories nos. two, 35,57 and 69. Now, Gordon has 75 career victo ries. The late Dale Earnhardt had 76. What better place to equal the great Earnhardt for sixth place on NASCAR’s all-time list? “That would be a huge honor,” said Gordon, a four-time series champion. “I’m just blown away and over whelmed that I’ve gotten to 75 (wins). To me, Dale is the all-time great, cer tainly among those whom I have had a chance to race against. I’ve never re ally had the chance to race against Richard (Petty) or Darrell (Waltrip) in his prime, or anybody else who’s up there. To me, Dale (Earnhardt) was the best I’ve ever raced against. To match up to something that he’s done and just to be one away from it is an honor. “The thing that I admired so much about him was the fact that he won over so many different years (with) cars changing, the sport changing, dif ferent drivers coming in and out of the sport, and yet, he always contin ued to find a way to get to victory lane and battle for championships. I think when you look at the span of time that he was able to do that, it’s very im pressive.” Gordon missed the Chase last year, and his position is pretty pre carious as the regular season enters its final five weeks. The trend is strong, though, since Gordon has CAMP From page 1B program allowed the coaches to do a lot of football-related teaching. Both men have proclaimed their innocence, but modern sports being what it is, they hold the burden of proof. We can’t argue with science. I can see this idea mov ing into other sports. Within Major League Baseball are the National League and the American League. Why not change that to the Enhanced League and the Human League. Then fans could truly see if using steroids matters in the end results. Test every baseball player and the league with the most banned substances abusers would play in the Enhanced League. That league may end up with the most players and teams but at the end of the season, the two leagues would play in the World Series. I see Tony Stewart as the past champion, so he’s carrying the torch right now. We certainly made our mark, and I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished and where I stand in the sport and what I represent: my sponsors, the sport and my team.” Gordon yearns for a fifth champi memory goes, back in the mid-19605. “It’s the first time I can remember,” said Way about the Demons not participat ing in camp. “It’s been good to get the kids by themselves and con centrate on football. “We’re no different from anyone else. The league could rename its teams the BALCO’s, Coke Heads, Mercenaries (for players motivated to enhance themselves for profit), Steroid Studs, and so on. The Human League would be called that because the players rely on what nature or the Supreme Being gave them. They improved through talent, practice and hard work. I suggest the same division for football, but who would be in the Human League? Americans need to wake No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet we’ll have plenty of practices before that first game to be prepared.” Warner Robins High also had an intense and well attended summer voluntary football program. Fame is fleeting and the drive to bask in its light burns athletes. That’s why a Human League is necessary. Once a people start mess ing with man-made drugs, aren’t they fiddling with their humanity - the part that makes them human? By taking steroids, ath letes seek to reach beyond those parts of themselves. Why stop at testosterone? Why not add bionic parts like the Six Million Dollar Man? Some have suggested that he has grown complacent through the years. That rankles Gordon, who has been criticized for several incidents of aggressive driving this year. “I would call it determination,” he said. “I would call it trying to get our selves back to where we need to be to win races and championships. In some ways, we have improved. We’ve been down and out, and people have pretty much written us off. I can tell by the way guys race me. “When I have a car that is capable of winning or running up front, then I’m going to be more aggressive with it to get those good finishes.” Contact Monte Dutton at hmduttonso@aol.com What concerns a football coach the most in the sum mer months is a high heat index, which, according to weather reports, reached 105 degrees this week. “It’s still smoking out here,” said Scott. It was Scott and his Panther staff who put their players through a character-building task last week in The Grind. dally if the parts are made in China. Whether Landis or Gatlin are actually guilty of using steroids is a matter of com plete indifference to me. Competition creates the problem. We as fans tolerate the existence, and the only peo ple who seem outraged are sports writers looking for causes and their own fame. Record books are mean ingless as a result of mass cheating. The baseball Hall of Fame will soon need a special section just to deal with BALCO’s children as they’re elected to the hall. Barry Bonds is on his way. McGuire took supplements that made a difference and physically destroyed him. They still had to hit the ball, make the plays, and take the check. They helped their teams win. In war that’s all that matters. Why should it be different in professional sports? With separate leagues, it wouldn’t be. I always wanted a child, son or daughter, who grew up to say they wanted to play in the Enhanced Leagues. “I want to count like a horse,” Junior or Juniorette 5B
