Box 191 CT, Perry, GA 31069 50 YEARS AGO... ■ Aug., 1956 - Mayor Stanley E. Smith named head of first Perry Chamber of Commerce Mayor Stanley E. Smith Jr. was elected president of the newly organized Perry Chamber of Commerce and plans were made for obtain ing a charter and approving by-laws for the 89-member group. Gardner Watson was elect ed vice-president and Hugh Kawson treasurer as the 15 members of the board of directors held their first for mal meeting. The nominating commit tee was composed of S. A. Nunn, C. E. Andrew, Yates Green and Marion Houser. Smith told the directors that 89 firms already had signed membership applica tions and that he believed that the membership would be 100 by the time the for mal organization was set up. The budget for the year was to be about $4,500. The officers and two other members were authorized by the directors to go ahead with the formal applications for charter and preparation of suggested by-laws. Smith later appointed Cooper Etheridgr and Eugene Beckham as the members of the executive committee. Watson was appointed to check on possible office space.
