Philmon Nyrome Lester Nicole Jackson and Philip Lester of Warner Robins announce the birth of a son, Philmon Nyrome Lester at Houston Medical Center on Ruth, didn’t see her play basketball in high school, but said, “Annie Ruth has always been a pillar of strength in our family. She looked after my father and mother when they became ill, took care of my four brothers, and has always been an inspiration to me.” Other close friends of Annie Ruth who can attest to her prowess on the bas ketball court are Alice Gilbert arid Louise Lawson, who was a young teacher at PHS during that era. Visiting and checking reg ularly on Ruth are Betty Boler Whipple, her niece, and Betty Connell Gray money by camping or sleep ing on an overnight bus. ■ 9. Be flexible in your planning. Catholic schools had Scott Foresman produce a religious version just for their use that incor porated religious stories and the characters were renamed John, Jean and Judy! Canada also jumped on the Dick and Jane bandwagon and published exact copies of the American originals. The series started with a pre-primer and continued up through grade six with such titles as We Work and Play, Sally, Dick and Jane and Guess Who. There were also many workbooks and teaching suds to go along with the series. With the civil rights move ment gaining ground in the ‘6o’s, the series introduced the first African-American characters, Mike, Pam srnd Penny who moved in next door. Children were taught family, they wanted to move to a smaller home with less maintenance but they didn’t want to leave Perry because they would be leaving behind their family and friends. Well, they didn’t have to. Houston Springs was just what they were looking for, and more. Their grandchildren love visiting and going for a swim or fishing in the lake. Not only are they residents, but Charles works as one of our “golf-cart patrolling” secu rity personnel. Annie Ruth represents the strong and proud fabric that Perry was built upon. She was unquestionably one of Perry High’s great est girl basketball players, and was a great competitor in the tradition of her five famous brothers. Unfortunately the series fell out of favor in the early 70’s when different teaching methods became more popu lar and politically correct. These wonderful books can still be found at book sales, yard sales and flea markets. Take a look at eßay and you will be amazed at the prices some of these wonder ful old books are bringing, especially pre-primers, com plete sets, teachers editions and the large rare picture charts the teachers used on an easel at the front of the class. Born in 1914 and now 92 years young, Ruth was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and is currently undergoing treat ment. She now resides at Colonial Gardens on Keith Drive in Perry. Being strong in her faith, she said, “I am ready to meet the Lord when my time comes.” Ruth, we pray the Lord will keep you among us for many years to come. We need you.
