She was the one Lady Bear fans could bank on seeing in the circle more times than not in 2005, and she responded with 18 wins. “She’s played all summer long and improved,” said Griffin. “She’s developed her curveball. Hopefully we can add that to her pitches. “I’m going to lean on Chelsea. Caitlyn Karrika also pitches for us, and she played last year. “We also have a freshman pitcher, Brianna Hancock, who moved here from Mississippi. She will be able to help us out.” But Griffin was not kid ding around about the Houston County youth. Aside from the pitcher’s spot, she expects to start as many as three freshmen on any given date. Also, there will not be a Lady Bear junior varsity team. The youngsters have the opportunity to grow up in a hurry during Houston’s run through a Class AAAAA schedule. Where to catch catfish Special to the Journal Georgia is home to several species of catfish, including channel, white, blue, flat head and bullheads (consist ing of several similar spe cies - yellow, brown, snail, spotted and flat). Following is a breakdown of some hot spots: ■ Lake Nottely - Contains good populations of channel and white catfish (averaging one pound or less) and fewer (but larger) flathead catfish. ■ Lake Tugalo - Contains an abundant population of white catfish. ■ Lake Marbury (Fort Yargo State Park) - Supports an excellent population of channel catfish. ■ Lake Oconee - Supports high numbers of channel, blue, flathead, white and bullhead species of catfish. ■ Flint River - Great location for flathead (5-30 pounds) or channel catfish. Still, our schedule is pretty tough with Lowndes, Warner Robins, Tift County. We’ll just see what hap pens.” What will happen first is a trip to Columbus for a tour nament hosted by Jordan High Aug. 18-19. Then the Lady Bears spend a weekend in Lowndes County to get the Region 1-AAAAA season started ■ Andrews Lock and Dam (Chattahoochee River) - Best location in southwest Georgia for catching a flat head catfish over 20 pounds. ■ Lake Seminole - Good catches of channel catfish during summer. ■ Lake Blackshear - Excellent channel cat fish spot. Best places are the main lake and below Warwick Dam. ■ Altamaha River - Great location for flathead catfish - current state record (83 lbs.) caught here. ■ Satilla River - Excellent fishing available for chan nel catfish, white catfish and several species of bullheads. ■ Southeast Georgia Public Fishing Areas (including Evans County PFA, Paradise PFA, Hugh M. Gillis PFA and Dodge County PFA) - Some of the best locations for channel catfish in south east Georgia.
