Offensively, a softball
team can string together
line drive after line drive,
or it can beat a ball into
the ground and out-run the
opposing defense, or it can
do a little of both at the
same time. Sans plans on
the Panthers executing the
latter game plan.
“On a scale of 1 to 10,
we’re at about a 5 right
now,” said Sans after only a
few days of official softball
practice. “When I say that,
we have some young hitters,
and we’ll see what happens
when they get in the game.
We have some experienced
hitters we’re counting on.
We know if we can hit 1
through 9, we’re going to be
good. We’re waiting to see
that.

Gars are a relic from a
large group of primitive fish.
They are long, slender with
toothy mouths and hard, dia

They are most common in
warm, sluggish rivers and
lakes and feed primarily on
other fish. Georgia is home

Perry High opened its
weight room to its ladies
during the summer with a
good turnout. Sans had the
Panthers on a three-day-a
week program of lifting for
45 minutes then an hour
of running. The running
included bleacher work at
the Perry football stadium.
There were also team
camps on the off-season
schedule aimed at building
team unity at its core.
As stated above, Region
4-AAA has undergone some
changes that will affect how
the 2006 schedule plays out
in softball.
During the first week of
the season, Perry has the
non-region home dates
with Americus-Sumter
and Hawkinsville. After a
tournament in Griffin, the
Panthers begin sub-region
play at Southwest-Macon.

Major fishing holes are

The Panthers must also

“I’d say Peach is going to
be a good team, and West

They didn’t win anything,
but they can hang in with

Georgia didn’t escape.
Thomas Flowers, Daniel

games of the season.
Not to be outdone,
Tennessee’s freshman Lee

drunken driving, making
him the fourth Volunteer to

Teammate Marsalous

Sunday for waving from
the window of his car what

Their lack of discipline
on the field reflected their
behavior off it. Good start,

When I taught in pub

schools, I could always tell
who was on the football
team by looking at the in
school suspension list.
Schools, college and high
school, are judged by the
behavior of their athletes.
That’s because those are
the students the public
sees.
Auburn, Miami,
Tennessee and Georgia
might be great academic
institutions but the average
reader won’t know because
too many of their players
face stays in penal institu

I think that player behav

of the student population.

Georgia was named one of

problems.
The old saying, “If you
go to bed with dogs, you’ll
wake up with fleas,” holds
true in athletics. Coaches
who insist on recruiting
talent without looking at
moral fiber get what they
deserve.
Oklahoma may have lost
its chance at a national
championship when its
starting quarterback Rhett
Bomar was dismissed from
the team for violating
NCAA rules. He took pay

period of time in excess of
the time actually worked.”
Roommate J.D. Quinn
also was dismissed for the

There’s quality and stu

athletes play out their eli

degrees.
Sports don’t take up all
their time. It’s the commu
nity service requirements.
