Goodel picked to lead IH
NORTHBROOK, 111. (AP) - Roger
Goodell was chosen as the NFL’s next
commissioner, succeeding the man
who groomed him for the job, Paul
Tagliabue.
The 47-year-old Goodell worked his
way from a public relations intern to per
haps the most powerful job in American
sports. Favored for months to get the
job, he was unanimously elected by the
league’s 32 owners on the fifth ballot.
The son of former U.S. Sen. Charles
Goodell of New York, he has been
Tagliabue's top assistant, particularly on
expansion and stadium construction. In
2000, he became the NFL’s chief operat
ing officer. Goodell becomes the league’s
fourth commissioner since 1946.

If Georgia Southern athlet
ics director Sam Baker could
make out the perfect football
schedule, he would pencil in
Georgia and Georgia Tech
once every four years.
“Maybe play a Georgia in
’OB, then Tech in ’lO, then
Georgia in ’l2 and so forth,”
Baker said. “It makes a lot
of sense when the teams in
state play.”
Baker already has Georgia
scheduled for 2008, and he
may soon add a game against
the Yellow Jackets.
Georgia Tech athletics
director Dan Radakovich
confirmed the possible game
Thursday in a discussion
with sportswriters from
around the state.
“I don’t know when that
might occur down the road,
but certainly it’s something
as we look to fill dates in
schedules in the coming
years, Georgia Southern
will be part of that mix,”

Georgia Tech ahd Georgia
Southern have never met in
football, but the relationship
between the Eagles’ Baker
and the YelloW Jackets’
Radakovich could change
that.
The two have talked about
football scheduling before,
albeit when Radakovich
was a senior assbciate ath
letics director at Louisiana
State. Radakovich took over
at Georgia Tebh earlier
this year, succeeding Dave
Braine. Baker stopped by
Radakovich’s office recently
to congratulate him on his
new position.
The conversation included
both teams’ future schedules.

to play 12 regular-season
games. The Yellow Jackets
are looking for opponents.
Baker and Radakovich
haven’t agreed on dates yet,
but Baker is optimistic.
“It’s encouraging for
(Radakovich) to be the one
saying they’d like to play
us,” Baker said. “I don’t
know how close we are (to a
date), but we’ve always said
we’d love to go to Atlanta
and play Tech.”
Not only does the game
make sense for Baker, but it
could make a lot of cents for
the Yellow Jackets as well.
“That’s where our alumni
base is,” Baker said. “We sold
10,000 tickets to Georgia (in
2004). I think we’d sell at
least that many, if not more,
for a game in Atlanta.”
Georgia Southern, a six

when the Eagles won 53-32
in 2004.

Coates iqjures knee, lost for season
ATHENS - Antavious
Coates spent the past year
working his way back to
health after tearing the
anterior cruciate ligament
in his left knee for the sec

safety is preparing for yet*
rehabilitation after being
lost for the season with a

“I worked my butt off this
summer and came ready
to play,” Coates said. “It’s
hard.”
The redshirt freshman
made it to just the third
practice before suffering an
injury in a punt drill on
Monday. He sat on a bench
with crutches on his side
and a brace on the knee
while his teammates prac

207-pound Coates first tore
the ACL in his left knee his
senior season at Greenwood
(S.C.) High School and then
re-injured it in workouts in
Athens in June, 2005.
Georgia coach Mark Richt
said players spent time with
Coates on Monday night to
“let him know they cared.”
