Program turning focus towards safety in sports
Special to the Journal
Keeping high school stu
dent athletes safe while
practicing and competing
in sports is the goal of the
sports medicine program
made available in Houston
County.
A staff of five full-time and
several part-time Certified
Athletic Trainers work along
with local orthopedic sur
geons, sports medicine physi
cians and primary care phy
sicians with a goal of keep
ing student athletes safe, as
part of Houston Healthcare’s
Human Motion Institute.
Additionally, a Saturday
morning Sports Clinic is pro
vided as a service to student
athletes by the physicians
and staff of Middle Georgia
Orthopedics.
“This program is an excel
lent example of how serious
Houston Healthcare and the
local physicians are in our
commitment to 'improving
the health and wellness of
people in our local communi
ty,” comments Geoff Aulds,
director of Rehabilitative
Services and Coordinator of
the Human Motion Institute
program.
“We are proud to have
this partnership with the
Houston County Board of
Education and The Westfield
Schools.”
K. Scott Malone, MD, a
physiatrist/sports medi
cine specialist with Middle
Georgia Orthopedics and
a member of the medical
staffs of Houston Medical
Center and Perry Hospital,
agrees that the program is
successful because of the col
laborative effort between the
physicians and the hospitals
working together to provide
a sports medicine program.
“We are glad to come
together as a community
partnership with the local
physicians, hospitals, high
schools and the school
administration to take care
of our student athletes,”
says Malone.
“This partnership has

he said a friend’s house, but
he did not know his name.
Later the friend’s name was
Floyd, but he did not know
an address.
When asked where he lived,
the driver said in Warner

in Warner Robins, then he
reportedly said Perry.
When asked where in
Perry, he reportedly said 209.
When asked 209 where? He

again denied any medica

The deputy, at that time,
called for another deputy
familiar with drug impair

offender got back in the car
to demonstrate the problems
with the car.
The deputy reportedly dis
covered the driver had been
working the controls of his
vehicle wrong. The lights
worked and the wipers did
turn off. “It was clear he was
not able to think clearly or
logically at this time,” the
deputy resolved.
The offender reportedly
agreed to some field sobriety
tests for the other deputy and
had some troubles and was
determined to be impaired.
He then reportedly admitted
to taking a painkiller a few
minutes earlier but did not
know the name.
When asked why had
denied it earlier, the offender
reportedly changed his story
to taking the painkiller ear
lier in the day. He was placed
under arrest and a search

The athletic trainers work
daily in the schools attend
ing practices, weight train
ing and conditioning ses
sions, as well as sporting
events. Additionally, they
provide health education to
area coaches, athletic direc
tors, students and parents
on a variety of topics includ
ing sports safety, preventive
and wellness measures, and
treatment of minor injuries.
In the event of an injury, the
athletic trainers also serve
as liaisons between the stu
dent athletes and the local
physicians.
The team of athletic
trainers is lead by Mike
Edgar, A.T., C., L.A.T,
Sports Medicine coordina
tor for Houston Healthcare.
According to Edgar, the pri
mary concern of the athletic
trainer is student safety.
“Our job is to keep the
student athletes safe,” he
explains. “When a student
is injured, we immediately
contact the team physician,
and we can make referrals
to orthopedic specialists
quickly without the normal
ken pipe commonly used to
smoke illegal drugs under
the floor mat.
Some small pieces of Brillo
were also found, which are
also used for the same. A
thin stick or rod was report
edly found earlier in the
offender’s shirt pocket.
On scene the offender was
read implied consent and
agreed to provide a urine
sample. When confronted

However, Edgar says the
students are not the only
ones benefiting from the
expertise of the trainers.
“With the athletic trainers
in the schools, the coaches
are free to coach because
they don’t have to worry
about making the injury
assessments anymore,” com
ments Edgar.
“We also alleviate some
stress off of the students’
parents. They are more
secure knowing that the
trainers are there to keep
their children safe while
practicing and during the
game.”
All of Houston
Healthcare’s athletic train
ers are certified through the
National Athletic Trainers
Association and are licensed
athletic trainers in the state
of Georgia. Together, the
team has more than 60 years
of training experience.
“Houston County is one
of the few counties in the
state that have certified
athletic trainers in the high
schools,” comments Edgar.
“We truly enjoy what we
do for the students, coaches
and parents, and we work
together as a team with the
hospitals and the physicians
really well.”
