Just remember if it wasn’t for me ... “You were saying?” “Never mind. You want fries or chips with that lunch order.”) I do hope everyone enjoyed that little parody. It’s just my way of saying what a joy it is to work in an environment where good-natured sarcasm is still appreciated. And as a way of showing just how fast time flies, pretty soon I will be at my one-year anniversa ry working as sports reporter in Houston County. But I’ve already been told that there will be no flowers coming my way. One thing I won’t do is go through a big long review of the last 365 days. As the new school year begins and all those fall sports get rolling, it is a good time to recount some of the accomplishments of our high schools from the previous school year. Houston County High School was tied for second place as the most successful athletic program in Region 1- AAAAA (Lowndes was first; Tift County shared second place). It’s no surprise con sidering that the Bears swept the region tournaments in basketball and won the league in boys soccer. Perry High took three big “silver medals” as the Region 4-AAA runner-up in football, boys basketball and baseball. Westfield had some Hornets who could take it to the wrestling mat and some softball players who could someday be seen on televi sion as collegians. Allow me to take this opportunity to give this newspaper’s congratula tions to all the youth base ball and softball teams who had successful state tourna ment and World Series runs. In my journeys around this county I have seen some fine youth facilities, including the Central Georgia Soccer Association park. So it seems our young folks are taken care of, and the building continues when you see what is going on at the various high school campuses. That said, I must concur with a topic breeched in a recent Houston Daily Journal editorial. It is sad when organizations like the Middle Georgia Baseball League and the International City Warriors cannot find a playing home in Houston County. Especially the Warriors, which carry the nickname of one of our towns. They had to jump from one practice location to another. Doesn’t really help in terms of moti vation to represent your home. Now, Middle Georgia Baseball League doesn’t nec essarily exclusively mean Houston County, but there are so many familiar names on the various rosters that Houston is definitely a factor. I certainly had no complaints about covering games at the Bibb County Sports Complex with the comfortable seating. But think about this: a cham pionship series is taking place in Macon and the only media in attendance? That’s right, the good old HDJ. There is room for improve ment in both of these orga nizations, but both can be a strong outlet for those who have that deep love for the game of football or base ball. (Guess what, nobody gets paid except the game officials.) So to anyone who holds the key to keeping them out of Houston County, remember that a lot of them are the same ones you prob ably rooted for as Demons, Panthers, Eagles, Bears ... you get the picture. (Now here are excerpts from a future conversation in the halls of the Houston Daily Journal: “Matthew, you said there wasn’t going to be a long, drawn-out review of your first year here. And what about that flowers comment? And, my goodness, you went all those inches without once mentioning the Georgia Bulldogs.” “Hey, it’s not easy to be witty week after week. I could have talked about how all those softball outlooks were basically the same story with only the names changed to fit the school.” “Is that what you did? That’s not fair. You know I don’t have time to edit each and every word. And if you ever slip vinegar and salt chips in here again ...”) SPORTS Thursday’s Sports Transactions By The Associated Press ■ BALTIMORE ORIOLES-Claimed RHP Anderson Garcia off waiv ers from the New York Mets and assigned him to Bowie of the EL. ■ MINNESOTA TWINS-Placed LHP Francisco Liriano on the 15-day DL. ■ ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS- Named Jerry Dipoto director of player personnel and A.J. Avengers come to Macon, then the Warriors go to Phenix City on Aug. 26. International City basically cannot afford another loss. “We have to win all of our games by a certain mar gin,” said Johnson. “The first four weeks were kind of rocky. But I know the potential and I can see these guys putting up good numbers. “I feel we can win out, make the playoffs and make a statement in the EFA national champion ship.” TOURNEY From page iB The format of the event is one round of flighted, four-ball stroke play and one round in a scramble format.
