Fiesta was designed by Fredrick Rhead and intro duced in early 1936. Fiesta has a very distinc tive design that is simple ■HhR t* „ Jillinda Falen Antiques carilynns@alltel.net and yet elegant. This din nerware has con centric rings near the edge and was produced in bright colors in response to the dis- ficult and bleak times follow ing the Great Depression. (If you remember from our previous articles, this is also the era when depression glass became popular). Did you realize that this bright and cheery dinner ware is still being produced today? A lot of it is being used in restaurants as well as modem homes and the Homer Laughiin Company is still going strong since its beginning way back in 1871. The original colors were red, yellow, light green, cobalt and ivory. Turquoise wasn’t introduced until the middle of 1937. These col ors are referred to by Fiesta collectors as “the original six”. The line became so popular that it included over 50 items in the product line in its first few years of pro duction. To promote sales in the late 1930 s and early 1940 s some special items were pro duced that are very rare to find today. These are; the french casserole, figure eight set, unlisted salad bowl and the set of promotional casse role and pie plate. The more common promotion pieces were the yellow disk juicer and the pitcher which are still easily found and not as pricey as the other promo tion pieces. In 1943, Fiesta Red was dropped from production due to the government’s wartime control of uranium which was a key component in the glaze manufacture. If you are looking for only the original Fiestaware, it is important to study the col ors closely. Although four of the origi nal colors are reproduced in the new line, there are dif ferences.
