Audrey Clearman and Thompson broke up the no-hitter with back-to-back two-out singles in the fourth inning. The shutout stayed in tact until the sixth inning with two Hornet runs off relief pitcher Macie Couey. Hanna Jones drew a walk to lead off the inning. She hustled her way to third base on Jennifer Wrye’s bunt. Gilliam drew a walk and stole second base, a move that drew some pro test from the John Milledge coaches. But the runners stayed where they were, and Clearman’s ground ball plated Jones. Gilliam later scored on a wild pitch. Westfield had the tying runs in scoring position in the seventh thanks to Mason Moreland’s two-out double, but the game ended on a strikeout. Gilliam pitched all seven innings for Westfield with seven strikeouts and no walks allowed after the leadoff batter in the first. WESTFIELD 9. STRATFORD 3 The Hornet bats were much more productive when Westfield took on Stratford Academy. The game ended after five innings due to the 90-min ute time limit. Westfield once again played as the home team, and when Stratford batted first against Gilliam that pesky leadoff walk led to a run. In fact, the Eagles didn’t have a hit in the first inning, but scored on what was ruled a wild pitch as Stratford’s batter missed a bunt attempt. Gilliam didn’t allow another baserunner that frame, and her offense responded with a four-run bottom half. Moreland led off with a walk, stole second base and scored on a hit by Jones. Clearman’s fly ball to right fell inside the line fair, and another walk loaded the bases. Meanwhile, the Bombers were busy beating host Stevens Creek in their tour nament opener, Northpoint in the next game, then Mt. View. That put them in the quarterfinals against First Baptist, Vidalia. You prob ably figured out they won by the aforementioned refer ence to the Harvesters play ing First Baptist, Vidalia in the semifinals, but it was far from easy, Herrington said. In fact, Herrington said, Vidalia was up 10-7 head ing into the bottom of the seventh. But, a four-run sev enth took care of that.
