Portis suffers hurt stoider
CINCINNATI (AP) - Running back
Clinton Portis partially dislocated his left
shoulder during Washington’s opening
series of the preseason Sunday night,
a significant setback for the Redskins’
revamped offense.
An MRI test detected the injury,
which involves the bone popping out
of place temporarily in the shoulder
socket. Standard treatment involves
rest and strengthening exercises.
There was no immediate indication
how long he will be sidelined.
Homish captured Indy 300
SPARTA, Ky. (AP) - Sam Hornish
Jr. reclaimed the Indy Racing League
points lead on Sunday, passing
Scott Dixon with four laps to go to
win the Meijer Indy 300 at Kentucky
Speedway.
The win was Hornish’s fourth of the
year and the eighth by Team Penske
this season. His second career vic
tory at Kentucky helped him get back
the points lead from teammate Helio
Castroneves, who finished third behind
Hornish and Scott Dixon.
Hornish now leads Castroneves by
seven points heading into the Indy
Grand Prix of Sonoma in two weeks.

Steve Flesch and Daisuke Maruyama

LONDON, Ontario (AP) - Cristie
Kerr overcome an eight-stroke deficit to
hand Angela Stanford a crushing loss
for the second time in three months,
shooting a bogey-free 7-under 65 for a
one-stroke victory.
Kerr, who came from four strokes back
to beat Stanford in May in the Franklin
American Mortgage Championship in
Tennessee, finished with a 12-under
276 total on the London Hunt and
Country Club course.
Pat Hurst shot a 68 to finish third at

Maskaev takes boxing title
LAS VEGAS (AP) - The newest

father of four who emigrated to the U.S.
11 years ago to chase the American
dream.
Oleg Maskaev captured it in a com

in a career many thought was over four
years ago.
The former Russian Army officer
who toiled tor years with poor manage
ment and training _ who was once
knocked out three times in five fights _
finally ascended to the top of his spqrt.
Some see Maskaev’s belt as another
indictment of a much-criticized division,
but the less cynical can appreciate the
thrill of a classic underdog story.
“It’s an honor," Maskaev said.
“Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, it’s great
to be among great fighters like that. It’s
been a dream of mine for a long time.”
Maskaev is talkative, charming and
upstanding, with a comfortable life with
his family in Staten Island in New York.
Throw in his late-career flourish, and
Maskaev is everything a heavyweight
champion should be. And he’s the clos
est thing to an American champ in a
downtrodden division long dominated
by U.S. fighters.
Rahman was the only remaining
American-born heavyweight belt-hold
er. Maskaev's ascension leaves all four
significant titles in the hands of fighters
from former Soviet republics.
Though this Soviet bloc could alien
ate American fight fans, the division
seems to keep its mystique no mat
ter how many mediocre champions it
produces. If heavyweight boxing can
survive John Ruiz, Chris Byrd and
Corrie Sanders, Maskaev should be a
downright star.

the team’s best pure hitter,
but he said then that the
road would be extremely dif
ficult because of the wear
and tear of the position and
the fact that the slow-mov
ing 22-year-old wouldn’t leg
out any infield hits.
After McCann had a two
run single early and then
slugged a key two-run
homer in Atlanta’s 7-4 vic
tory against Milwaukee, the
All-Star reserve once again
stood at .350.
And Cox said he could
make a run at the batting
crown.
“Yeah, he can. He can hit,”
Cox said. “Mac is just won
derful. He’s a smart hitter
as well as a smart catcher.
He can do a lot for a 22-year
old kid.”
The greatest challenge for
McCann will be making up
the necessary plate appear
ances to qualify for consid
eration. Because of an ankle
injury in May and regular
days off, McCann is off the
required pace of 3.1 plate
appearances for every one of
his team’s games for quali
fication.
Through Sunday, McCann
had 332 plate appearances.
He’d need to accumulate
503 by season’s end.
If he plays in 40 of his
team’s final 46 games, aver
aging four plate appearances
a game, he’d finish with 492
plate appearances, 11 shy.
But factoring in a couple of
five plate-appearance games
and a pinch-hit at-bat here
and there, McCann will be
very, very close.
But McCann’s quick to
remind you of the other end
of things - he still has to
hit, and hit well, to have a

FRONT-OFFICE SHUFFLE: The
Braves announced Sunday
that a familiar face, Paul
Snyder, will become the
team’s new director of base
ball operations.
As the organization’s
head of scouting, Snyder
was an integral cog in align
ing things for the Braves’
recent run of success. Health
issues had slowed him down
in recent years, but the 70-
year-old again felt like tak
ing on more.
“He’s an ideal guy - the
most ideal guy - to have
to fill this position,” GM
John Schuerholz said. “The
fact that Paul’s health has
worked its way back that he
has the energy and excite
ment and anticipation to
take on the situation such
as this one is remarkable.”
Also, scout and crosscheck
er Kurt Kemp was promoted
to become the Braves’ new
director of player develop
ment.
The moves are related to
former assistant GM Dayton
Moore’s departure earlier in
the year to become Kansas
City’s GM.

ONE IN, ONE OUT: The Braves
welcomed veteran infielder
Chipper Jones back from
his side injury Sunday just
in time to wave goodbye to
young infielder Willy Aybar

Aybar, put on the 15-day

his Braves debut July 30.
After missing 13 games,
Jones went 0-for-2 with a
