Child with disability
found dead in lake
MACON (AP) - Accidental
drowning was the cause of
death for a 6-year-old autis
tic boy. whose body was found
in a lake at the apartment
complex where he lived,
authorities say.
A rescue helicopter spot
ted the body of Jabriel
Eason on Monday after a
20-hour search, said Sgt.
Melanie Hofmann of the
Macon police.
Bibb County Coroner
Leon Jones said an autopsy
revealed no injuries to the
body and determined he died
of accidental drowning.
Eason went missing Sunday
when his mother took a nap.
She had a new lock installed
in her apartment after the
boy had gotten out of the
unit about a month or so
earlier, said Eason’s pater
nal grandfather, Len Eason,
a retired captain with the
Bibb County Sheriffs Office.
She had also blocked the
door with a couch.
Len Eason said Jabriel
apparently climbed onto the
couch and was able to reach
the lock, then move the
couch to open the door.
Jabriel’s grandfather said
the boy’s disability, coupled
with the nearby lake, had
been worrisome.
“Being autistic is a hand
ful in itself. He didn’t talk,
but he still had good mobil
ity skills. He loved the out
doors, going to the outside
world; he was just a natural
kid,” Eason said.

Georgia decided Monday to
work out a water-sharing
agreement on one of two
contested river system,
without help from Florida
Gov. Jeb Bush, who didn’t
attend their meeting or send
a representative.
Georgia has been involved
since the 1990 s in what
has become known as the
tri-state water wars, a
dispute with neighbor
ing Alabama and Florida
over how to manage the
Alabama-Coosa-Tallapoosa
and the Apalachicola-
Chattahoochee-Flint river
basins. Georgia Gov. Sonny
Perdue and Alabama Gov.
Bob Riley said Monday that
they had decided to work
out a compromise separate
ly for the Alabama-Coosa-
Tallapoosa basin, but would
continue working with
Florida on an Apalachicola-
Chattahoochee-Flint agree
ment.
“Alabama has some spe
cific needs that we’re aware
of,” Perdue said. “There’s
not that much divergence
of opinion, so we’ve made a
decision to work on ACT,”
Riley added.
Both governors said they
are confident of a settle
ment. The water-sharing
dispute among the three
states has been in media
tion since May, before a for
mer federal judge. Perdue
and Riley agreed to meet in
Columbus for an update on
the negotiations, which are
private. They said they are
pleased with the progress.
Bush said he couldn’t
make the meeting at the
Columbus Convention &
Trade Center because of a
scheduling conflict.
“I’m happy to meet, but
I think it’s important to
establish some criteria by
designees that know some
thing about water flows
over the long haul,” Bush
said. “I’ve suggested to Gov.
Perdue that that would be a
good first step. 1 was going
to meet with them, but they

Perdue described Bush’s
absence as a “disappoint
ment.”
“I think this is a rather
historic meeting,” said the
mediator, Charles B. Renfew
of San Francisco. “I’m very
pleased with the progress.
I’ve been very encouraged
by the willingness of these

Releases from Lake Lanier,
a major source of drinking
water for the Atlanta met

flare-up of the dispute this
summer. Lanier is a reser
