GOP files complaint
against Taylor
ATLANTA (AP) - In a
sign that the race for gov
ernor is heating up, the
state Republican Party on
Wednesday filed an eth
ics complaint against
Democratic Lt. Gov. Mark
Taylor for accepting $35,000
in contributions they say are
illegal.
The Taylor camp insists
the contributions are legally
permissible and argues that
it’s Republican Gov. Sonny
Perdue who has the ethics
problems. At issue are eight
$5,000 contributions made
to the Taylor campaign from
different Carl Gregory car
dealerships, all received on
Dec. 15, 2005. Republican
Party spoksewoman Clelia
Davis said that such bun
dling is illegal in Georgia,
where the limit for an indi
vidual is $5,000.
“Mark Taylor has been
caught red-handed and still
refuses to admit he was
wrong,” Davis said.
But the Taylor camp main
tains that it was legal in 2005
for related businesses to con
tribute separate checks.
“Our campaign attorney
says these contributions are
perfectly legal under the law
in 2005, the year they were
given,” Taylor spokesman
Rick Dent said Wednesday.
But while the ethics law
changed, Republicans are
arguing that the contribu
tions violate a 2002 decree
from the state Ethics
Commission in a case involv
ing Perdue. The commission
questioned separate contri
butions made to Perdue’s
gubernatorial campaign
from Perdue’s own busi
nesses. Perdue eventually
became the first Georgia
governor to pay a fine to the
state Ethics Commission for
campaign violations. As part
of the consent order, Perdue
agreed to repay SIB,OOO in
excess campaign contribu
tions...

Deadly intersection
claims six lives
DEMOREST (AP) -
Authorities say six people,
as young as 7, have died
in traffic accidents at the
same northeast Georgia
intersection over the past 19
months.
Habersham County
Coroner Don Pitts said
the latest victim was 89-
year-old Frank Trotter
of Clarkesville, who died
Tuesday at Grady Memorial
Hospital in Atlanta after a
collision at the intersection
of Ga. 365 and Mount Airy-
Demorest Road.
Trotter was attempting a
turn from the northbound
lanes of 365 when his car
collided with a southbound
vehicle driven by Thomas
Wilfred, 48, of Toccoa, the
Georgia State Patrol said.
Wilfred was treated and
released from Northeast
Georgia Medical Center in
Gainesville.
Teri Pope, spokeswoman
for the Georgia Department
of Transportation, said a
controlled interchange is
planned at the intersection
on the divided, four-lane
highway. But she said the
project is not yet funded and
preliminary engineering is
not on DOT’s three-year
project list.
Perdue's Ha. land
deal questioned
ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia
Gov. Sonny Perdue spent $2
million to buy about 20 acres
of Florida land just miles
from Disney World, pur
chasing the property from a
wealthy Republican donor.

Perdue bought the land
from Stanley Thomas, a
Georgia mega-developer with
a fleet of planes that the gov
ernor used at least once to
get to a West Coast fundrais
er. The 2004 purchase came a
little more than a year after
Perdue appointed Thomas to
the state Board of Economic
Development. About a year
after the purchase one of
Thomas’ companies, Fourth
Quarter Properties, donated
a whopping $250,000 to the
state Republican Party.
Perdue said there was
nothing improper about the
deal. The Republican gover
nor said that he bought the
land in Florida because pur
chasing property in Georgia
while he was governor would
have created a conflict of
interest.
“I like land,” Perdue said
following an environmen
tal speech Wednesday in
Savannah.
“I determined to buy out
of Georgia because I didn’t
want it to ever be said that
I influenced anything. If I
bought land within 100 miles
of a new road construction,
I’d be accused by the other
side of influencing that. So I
chose to go out of state.”
