He said construction of one of the hangars would be funded this year using the FAA grant and the bank loan. “We have a waiting list to fill one hangar already,” MacDonald said. “The rental money will be used to pay back the loan.” He noted “rental revenue funds 45 to 60 percent of operations at the airport now.” The DOT grant is for con struction of the “T” hangar taxiway. MacDonald noted the airport would have to build a retention pond on site and “may use that dirt for this construction as in-kind matching for the grant.” MIXING From page iA getting the 70 percent. He noted one of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax projects is the straight ening of a road to the air port, which is needed for the precision approach improvements. MacDonald said the preci sion approach would “make us more popular with jet traffic. It will make us sig nificantly more attractive to business fliers,” he said. He explained that by saying business travelers plan weeks in advance, and sometimes have to divert to other airports because of weather simply because the airport does not have instrument approach capa bility. • Signed a planning fund ing agreement with Sprint/ Nextel in which the county will be paid $112,097 by Sprint/Nextel to cover the planning costs for the re banding of the 800 MHz frequencies. The Federal Communications Commission has required the re-banding to avoid interference with the wire less and emergency radio communications. The county uses the 800 MHz system for public safety radios and the 911 Center. He also suggested taking some of the money from the Development Authority and “giving it to the airport to solve the spec building problem.” Wood noted the 120,000 square-foot building also called the Mid Georgia Corporate Center out near the airport has remained vacant for five years and said there was “nothing out at the site indicating it was available to anybody." Wood also voiced his objections to the SPLOST money being used to pay back the remaining $2.1 million of the loan for the spec building and the coun ty paying $245,000 for oper ations of the Development Authority. and sheriff’s departments and 911. The scheduled planning completion date is in January 2007. • Accepted three local assistance grants from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs total ing $19,000. The $4,000 grant is to provide funding to supple ment recent state budget cuts, and the SIO,OOO grant to fund a program for chil dren at risk, teen pregnan cy, drop out and abuse pro grams at Kids Journey.
