WASHINGTON, D.C.
- Although the Washington
Nationals put Alfonso
Soriano on waivers
Wednesday, the team appar
ently doesn’t have any inten
tion of letting the all-star
slugger go.
The move was nothing
more that shuffling papers,
Washington manager Frank
Robinson said.
Teams often put their best
players on waivers after
the trade deadline to test
the market. Atlanta did it
recently with Andruw Jones.
The same happened with
Soriano last season while he
was at Texas.

Mayfair “so happy to
be on the first tee”
By Garry Smits

MEDINAH, 111. - After
beating the odds to get to
the PGA Championship,
Billy Mayfair is taking it a
step further by contending
in the season’s final major.
The 40-year-old PGA Tour
veteran and winner of five
events, shot 69 Thursday in
the first round of the PGA,
at the Medinah Country
Club. Mayfair birdied six of
his first 11 holes to briefly
tie Lucas Glover for the lead
at the time, then stumbled a
bit with three bogeys down
the stretch.
However, since Mayfair
is only two weeks removed
from surgery for testicular
cancer, it might have been
the round of the day.
“My biggest thought of the
day is that I was just so
happy to be on the first tee,”
Mayfair said.
“The sun was out and it
was just a beautiful sight
and I know where I was two
weeks ago. I can’t explain
how great it was just to be
here.”
Mayfair said he was moti
vated throughout the round
by encouragement and
cheers from the fans.
“The greatest thing out
there was the fans,” he said.
“Everybody rooting me on
really made a difference.”
Mayfair said he had doubts

coach Mike
Bobo have had a grasp on
the quarterback order even
before the first scrimmage
last Saturday and thinks
he’ll know who the starter is
by Sunday.
“We don’t have it nailed
down,” Richt said.
“We hope to have confir
mation of what we think. If
somebody plays wildly good
or bad it could deter what
we’re thinking. It’s a big
day still because it is really
close.”
The depth chart of senior
Joe Tereshsinski, redshirt
sophomore Blake Barnes,
redshirt freshman Joe Cox
and freshman Matthew
Stafford hasn’t changed
since the start of spring.
“We may just have to make
some tough decisions based
on everything we’ve seen,
even going back in time to
the spring if we have to, on
this QB thing,” Richt said
after Saturday’s scrimmage.
a trade. If they don’t like
what’s being offered, they
can withdraw Soriano from
waivers. By making a move
now, Washington can get an
idea what it might take to
re-sign Soriano at the end of
the year.
“It’s no big deal, ” Robinson
said. “Sometime during the
year, everybody’s put on
waivers.”
Soriano was hitting .289
with 38 home runs, 30
doubles and 78 RBI after
Thursday’s game. He will be
a free agent at the end of the
season.
He was one of the higher
profile players being shopped
before the July 31 trade
deadline, and he said then he
didn’t want to leave. He said
about how well he would
play, since he hasn’t been in
a tournament in a month.
Plus, he said, the apprehen
sion about his cancer diag
nosis and treatment left him
emotionally drained.
“Mentally and physically,
it wore me out,” he said. “It
was hard at times and today
is still Thursday.”
Doctors expect Mayfair to
make a full recovery.
MICKELSON
DOUBLES DOWN: For
the third time this season
and the second time in a
major championship, Phil
Mickelson used two drivers
in a round.
He said he used each driv
er a half-dozen times dur
ing his first round Thursday,
and said there was a “90
percent chance” he would
continue the practice for
the rest of the week, but
wouldn’t decide until just
before each round.
“It is day-to-day,” he said.
Mickelson uses one driver
for draws and another, with
a slightly shorter shaft, for
fades. To keep to the 14-club
rule, he takes two of his
four wedges out of the bag,
the sand wedge and pitching
wedge.
“Those are clubs I really
don’t need because the par
-48 are so long I’m hitting 7,
8 and 9-iron,” he said. “The
par-5s are long irons and the
par-3s are mid-irons.”
Barnes’ spring evalua
tion was clouded by knee
and foot injuries before he
came on this preseason as
he returned to health. Cox
threw four interceptions in
the spring game.
Richt said that a start
ing quarterback and his
backup could be revealed
on Saturday, but it could be
Monday before an announce
ment is made because the
Bulldogs have a Saturday
morning practice and Picture
Day is scheduled for that
afternoon.
“We’ll probably play more
than one guy at least early
on,” Richt said.
“I don’t know how many
games it will go before we
really settle in and say this
is the guy.”
Richt said the quarter
backs will get equal snaps
today working with the first
team.

Tech’s Joe Anoai likes play

just do without the run

“I probably should eat a
little less,” Anoai said. “I’m
about 290 pounds, 295 right
now, but I’m moving well
with it.”
Anoai, a two-year start
er at defensive tackle, has
been practicing at end all
week because of injuries
to Darrell Robertson and
Michael Johnson. Anoai will
likely move back inside in
time for Saturday’s scrim
mage -- both Robertson and
Johnson could return as
early as Friday -- but he’s
enjoying his time on the
edge.
Plus, the versatility he’s
showing could impress NFL
scouts, he said.
“It’s going to be good for
me to have some experience
out there if people do want
me to play on the outside,”
Anoai said. “It doesn’t hurt
me at all at tackle.”
The footwork and moves
he employs at tackle trans
late to the end position. And
his strength makes him
tough to double-team.
“The one thing I’ve had
to adjust to is setting up
moves because you’re tak

before you even engage
with the tackle out at
end,” he said.

RICHT WANTS TO GO
DEEP AT RECEIVER:
The wide receivers have had
such a strong preseason that
Richt said he will encourage
receivers coach John Eason
to use a rotation that could
go seven deep.
Mohamed Massaquoi is
Georgia’s leading returning
receiver and Richt said he
likes what he’s seen from
Kenneth Harris, Mario Raley,

“I’m encouraged by the

more than testing the waters

Atlanta. He’s hitting a team
best .324 with 15 home runs
and 44 RBI in Richmond.
Also, Kyle Davies con

his rehabilitation with the
Mississippi Braves.
The southpaw from
Stockbridge, Ga., pitched
seven innings Wednesday
night in a 7-2 win over
Tennessee.
He gave up two runs on
four hits. He also struck out
three.
Davies is trying to work
his way back to the majors
following groin surgery last
May.

Gailey said all three

Gailey drew one positive
from the situation: Dealing

for a team.
“That’s part of it,” Gailey
said. “You have to learn to
fight through those types of
situations.”

Gailey and defensive coor

But the competition for

Gailey said. And it’s not

“A lot of people are play

Gailey said.

WITH MISSISSIPPI
ST.: Georgia Tech will play
Mississippi State instead of
Louisville in the 2008 and
2009 seasons.
“You have to decide which
teams out there that are
available that you want to
play,” Gailey said. “To me,
if we have to play another
tough game, I’d rather play
an SEC team. It’s closer.
And it’s somebody our play

recognize.”
The 2008 game is sched
uled for Atlanta while the
Yellow Jackets will visit
Starkville, Miss., in 2009.
The two teams haven’t met
since the 1929 season.
The addition of Mississippi
State gives Georgia Tech
three SEC opponents in
2009. The Yellow Jackets
also play Vanderbilt and
Georgia that season.
