according to one of the pas

McKinney’s inflamma

“Nobody was impressed

Rev. Martin said. “They

The Rev. Martin said he

very upset by the perfor

morning, the second day
of the two-day conference,
McKinney said electronic

accusations that President
Bush profited from the Sept.

The Rev. Martin said some
of the pastors were saying
McKinney must have lost

After her speech, the Rev.

The latter charge stems
from Finnan telling detec

In reality, Finnan led an

GOP rips Taylor
on immigration
By BRANDON
LARRABEE
Morris News Service
ATLANTA - Republicans
blasted Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor
for not taking a more active
role earlier this year in leg
islative efforts to crack down
on illegal immigration as
Gov. Sonny Perdue released
an ad touting the controver
sial measure.
The. coordinated moves
Thursday suggested an
effort to use an issue that
has stoked national passions
in Perdue’s effort to fend
off Taylor, his Democratic
challenger in this fall’s elec
tions.
Sen. Chip Rogers, the
Woodstock Republican who
sponsored the main anti-ille
gal immigration bill in the
2006 session, said Thursday
that Taylor had failed to show
leadership on the issue.
“This governor has shown
that when faced with an issue
that is affecting Georgia citi
zens, and a difficult issue,
no question, that he shows
leadership,” Rogers said.
“His opponent, on the other
hand, has not shown leader
ship on this issue and has,
on a number of occasions,
suggested that it’s simply a
federal issue.”
Taylor has said he would
have signed Senate Bill 529,
the immigration legislation,
a stance his campaign reiter
ated Thursday.
“Mark Taylor fully sup
ported Senate Bill 529 and
believes that illegal immi
gration is just that - ille
gal,” spokeswoman Chrissy
Noonan said in a statement
issued after Rogers’ news
conference.
But Rogers said support
ing the bill after the fact
wasn’t enough.
“Simply saying that
(Taylor) would sign a bill
after the fact that it has been
signed and that the polls
say that clearly the Georgia
people want this may be sup-

porting, but it’s not leader
ship,” Rogers said.
However, Perdue would
not say before the legislation
passed whether he would
sign it, and it was not in the
governor’s official agenda
for the 2006 session.
And like Taylor, Perdue’s
office said last year that, at
least initially, the governor
also thought of immigration
as something the federal gov
ernment should deal with.
“We recognize that
there are serious concerns
about illegal immigration,
but the governor believes
this is primarily a federal
issue,” Heather Hedrick,
Perdue’s press secretary,
told the Atlanta Journal-
Constitution in February
2005.
By October of that year,
Hedrick suggested Perdue
was open to legislation,
but still placed most of the
responsibility on the nation
al government.
“Although illegal immigra
tion is primarily a federal
issue, we will take action at
the state level to limit the
drain on taxpayer-funded
programs by illegal immi
grants who don’t contrib
ute to the system,” she told
Morris News Service.
In a statement, Democratic
Party Chairman Bobby Kahn
derided Perdue’s claims to
lead on the issue.
“Governor Perdue’s record
on illegal immigration is like
his record on so many other
issues - he uses TV ads and
press releases to try to cre
ate the illusion of action, but
he certainly hasn’t shown
any real leadership,” Kahn
said.
