Troop 498 roundup proves successful Special to the Journal The Girl Scouts, accord ing to Linda Stanley, site coordinator for Perry Girl Scouts and leader of Brownie Troop 498, the organization had a successful round up recently, but are still in need of troop leaders. They are now dealing with the task of placing approx imately 45-50 Girl Scouts from Perry Primary and Morningside Elementary, she said. “We were worried that we would not have anyone to sign up and now we need leaders for these girls,” Stanley said. We train any one, as long as they can pass a criminal background check.” The age group they need the most help with, she said, is the Junior Girl Scouts - grades four, five and six - and some of the third grade Brownie girls. “The phone at our council !m OiCßApcunc GO ass Ape] (X I Oc\y SpA Massages, Facials And Much, Much More... She smiles ... mischievously. “Are you thinking what I’m thinking,” I ask. “Are you thinking what I’m thinking,” she replies. “Yeah,” I say. “Is Pluto a planet or what?” She frowns. I don’t under stand. I go to my child. “Shelbi. Do you think ...” She interrupts. “Dad. Are you going to ask me if I think Pluto is a planet or more kin to UB 313,. you know that celestial body discovered in the Kuiper Belt that mea sures roughly 2,397 kilo meters compared to Pluto’s 2,288?” “Uh, no,” I cover. “I was going to ask you if you thought this tie goes with this shirt.” (What do they teach these kids these days?) i ■ I Schools, Red Cross partner to provide Kits for Kidz Special to the Journal . I’ve done the astrono my thing before: telescope + daughter + backyard = nice bonding experience. It’s pretty neat - from a novice standpoint, but to do that for eight hours every day, yeah, I suppose it could get to be pretty boring. One astronomer looking over another’s shoulder, the first looking in a telescope. “Mars still there?” “Uh huh.” One second later: “How about now?” “Uh huh.” . Two seconds later: “What * about now?” - “Uh huh.” Three seconds later: “And now?” “OH MY GOD! ...just kid ding.” (A little astronomer humor.) Still, if they debunk this, pretty soon other things we hold true will fall. For instance, “Lawrence” - not Bluto - will now be Popeye’s greatest nemesis, the moon will no longer be made of cheese, the Earth will no longer be the perfect meat ball - even though it will, still be full of them - and Uranus ... Hmm. Maybe those ’ astronomers and scientists will make it possible to use this next time I’m having a checkup: “You know doctor. It’s now been proven that Pluto is indeed a planet. Perhaps that’s a place bet- . ter left to all your ‘prob ing.’ Let’s leare all those unexplored canals of Mars unexplored, shall we?” astrono mers and scien tists from around the world were slated to meet this past week in Prague to decide if Pluto, discovered in 1930 pencils, crayons, scissors, markers, a pencil case, a paint set and more. ; The combined retail value of the supplies is $24.95.
