Making the decision on his own, Adam Laßoche bunted into a double play with the potential tying and winning runs on base and none out against Florida closer Joe Borowski, and the Marlins hung on for a 4-3 victory at Dolphin Stadium. In the process, Atlanta ended a rather blah 4-3 road trip against Washington and Florida - the NL East’s bottom two teams - that essentially failed to advance the club up the wild-card ladder any more than when it left home. Cincinnati’s victory Sunday pushed the Braves (58-65) 5 1/2 games back in the pic ture. They’re also back to ninth in the standings. Laßoche has 25 home runs and 68 RBIs this season, 20 of the homers and 52 of the RBIs on the road. Langerhans (.240) and Tony Pena Jr. (.050) were the last avail able bench players. - By R. There wasn’t a point total kept on the scoreboard, but in an unofficial tally the Bears had 37 points to 32 by Jones County. Most of the Jones County scoring came against the Houston County freshmen and junior varsity units. In fact, the visiting Greyhounds didn’t score in the first half when the front-line players of the Bears dominated the action. Something that head coach Doug Johnson hopes becomes a trademark of the Houston season happened in the opening series. NS, PY meet in preseason matchup By MATTHEW BROWN Journal Sports Writer Unlike the other high school scrimmages this past week at McConnell- Talbert Stadium, the Perry High School Panthers and Northside Eagles lined up for kickoffs and rushed the punters. Both Brandon Jordan and Deonta Jordan scored rushing touchdowns to lead Northside to a 27-0 win Saturday. For the Eagles, senior Jacobi Rodrigues and soph omore Joe Scott split time at quarterback. Marques Ivory, a junior who is projected as the start ing Northside signal-caller, sat out Saturday action with shoulder concerns. Perry had the first scoring opportunity when Northside had to fall on the opening kickoff at the 3-yard-line. Six plays later, Kanorris Davis recovered a high snap fumble on the 17. The Panthers tried a field goal of 32 yards, but came up short. Anthony Taylor’s pressure led to a sack for Northside on the Panther 43. The Eagles took the ensu ing punt and marched on a nine-play drive of 78 yards. Tijuan Green, the lead- Sports The Bears took eight min utes off the clock in running 17 plays and scored a touch down. The drive had five first downs, with senior DJ Dodson converting a 3rd and-6 on the ground, quar terback Martrez King sneaking on 4th-and-inches, and Lydel Jones taking an inside reverse and moving the sticks. The touchdown went to senior Eric O’Neal, also on the ground. “That’s what we have to do,” said Johnson about the time-consuming sequence. The Bear defense, which played its base sets, didn’t give up a first down in the first half. Kyle Griffin, a senior, spent most of his time running down the Jones quarterback. Anthony Harris made a head-on hit while Gavin Whitfield recorded a sack.
