Freshman Ricardo Crawford had his right arm in a sling Saturday after injuring his collarbone on a goal-line drill in Friday’s scrimmage. He expects to be out “at least a few days” until the swelling goes down. Gant, who dislocated a shoulder, said coaches might hold him out of the Sept. 2 season opener against Western Kentucky. Elmore had knee surgery this past week but could be available for the game. “It’s quite difficult because we have no depth right now,” sophomore starter Jeff Owens said. “We usually have like a four- or five-man rotation. It’s just cutting it down short.” Meanwhile, red shirt freshman cornerback Bryan Evans, competing as the nickel back, expects to miss the season opener with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee. Surgery is not expected. CLEATS 61 TMK£ BAll?\ i?e heavy! J _____ _______ •/• 1 x *®i HKb - e_t sh^ «m*»m>wD rF QO _ r coun.sl. Center Nick Jones, men tioned by coach Mark Richt among the team’s top lead ers, said Saturday that in his eyes, fifth-year senior Joe Tereshinski appears to be leading the pack for the starting quarterback job. Tereshinski threw two touchdown passes and was the only quarterback who did not throw an intercep tion in Friday’s scrimmage. “I think Joe T. seems like he’s out front right now,” Jones said. “He’s been that way since spring. In an onlineathens.com poll asking who will be the starter, Tereshinski has received 55 percent of the votes by Saturday after noon, followed by Matthew Stafford with 30.1, Blake Barnes with 11.8 and Joe Cox with 3.1. THIS AND THAT: Sophomore Kenneth Harris “is in the lead,” to be the starting flanker ahead of Mikey Henderson and A.J. Bryant, receivers coach John Eason said. Senior Mario Raley is the start ing inside receiver. Six-foot -5 freshman Kris Durham continues to look ready to make an impact this year. The latest example was a sideline catch in the scrim mage. “I saw it coming his way and I thought it was over thrown,” Eason said. “He reached up and pulled it down. I think he can help us this year, without a doubt.” SPORTS Weekend Sports Transactions By The Associated Press ■ BOSTON RED SOX - Recalled RHP Jermaine Van Buren and LHP Javier Lopez from Pawtucket of the IL. Tereshinski named starting QB By Marc Weiszer Morris News Service Joe Tereshinski assumed the top spot on Georgia’s quarterback depth chart at the start of spring practice largely because of seniority. Six months later he’s the one that coach Mark Richt will start against Western Kentucky on Sept. 2 after Tereshinski held off his three challengers in a heat ed, much-watched position battle. The fifth-year senior from Athens Academy got the news on Sunday and Richt made the announcement in a hastily called 9 p.m. tele conference with reporters, a day earlier than expected. The surprise for many will be in the pecking order after Tereshinski. Redshirt fresh man Joe Cox, who threw four interceptions in the spring game, is the N 0.2 quarterback with highly touted freshman Matthew Stafford and redshirt sopho more Blake Barnes named as No. 3s. “I think Joe T has done a great job of competing and performing,” Richt said. “He’s been very solid all the way through. He’s been very consistent all the way through and has just done a real nice job of leading and running the system. He’s competed well and he’s held off these young bucks and he deserves to start this ball game.” Richt said Cox, who threw 66 touchdown passes as a senior at Independence High School in Charlotte, N.C., is an accurate passer and fierce competitor who has begun to run the offen sive system well. “He’s become fairly con sistent, not as consistent as he needs to be, but he’s really made a lot of strides,” Richt said. “As of today, he’s in position to be our No. 2. The other two guys are sitting there kind of as a Co-3 right now. Stafford was rated by some as the nation’s top high school quarterback coming out of Highland Park in Dallas, Texas. He has the strongest arm on the team, but Richt said because Stafford was a true freshman he was “behind the 8 ball,” as far as know ing what do in the offense in every situation. “H,e, of course, was not elated by any stretch of the imagination,” Richt said when asked how Stafford took the news. “He’s a pret ty mature kid.
