In that second game Friday, Perry had an inju ry to its pitching rotation. So Smith made four starts on Saturday and won two of them on run-rule short ened shutouts. But first, the Panthers faced Griffin again and lost 5-4. Perry followed that up with a 12-0 win against Dublin and an 11-0 win over Peach County. In the third and final game against Griffin, the home team had one big inning of six runs and won by six 11-5. The home runs kept on coming for Perry as lead- ter, and each side ran its offense for five minutes. In the fourth period, each team had seven minutes on offense with all series start ing at the opponent’s 25- yard-line. Alvin Matheny had a near interception for Houston, but that was the lone highlight as Jones County scored three touch downs. The Bears’ turn with the football turned into a field goal kicking contest. Taylor Jones scored from 40 and after January 1, 1961, who: ■ purchases a season hunting license in Georgia. ■ is at least 12 years old and hunts with a weapon without adult supervision (adult supervision means 18 years of age or older with a minor being in sight or hearing distance of that per son). ■ hunts big game (deer, turkey, bear) on a wildlife management area (includ ing any hunter age 12 or older). The team had five home runs in two home wins last week, nine overall. “We tried to change our philosophy and our approach at the plate,” said Sans. “They bought into it early, and you can see the changes. “We’re hitting down through the ball, and some 42 yards out while Michael Thompson chipped in a 24- yarder. It was far short of what he expected - and needed - to get back into the race to make the Chase for the Championship. “Pretty good day after what we’ve been through in the last dew weeks, but it’s not what we wanted,” Biffle said. “We felt like we had a better car than that. “This kind of seals our fate out of the Chase right here. We needed a win here today or finish in the top three, plus we needed some body that was close to us to have trouble.” Biffle now is 12th in the standings, but he’s 189 points behind lOth-place Dale Earnhardt Jr. Kasey Kahne, who finished fourth in the race, is 11th in the rankings, 49 points from the top 10. Jimmie Johnson still con tinues to lead the standings with a 58-point cushion over race winner Matt Kenseth. Both of those drivers will qualify for the Chase if they simply start the next three races. Nothing else is settled. Kevin Harvick is third in the standings, but he’s only 168 points from falling out of the top 10. Mark Martin is fourth, while Tony Stewart is fifth, Jeff Gordon is sixth, Kyle Busch is seventh, Denny Hamlin is eighth, Jeff Burton is ninth and Earnhardt Jr. is 10th. CANT WE AU GIT ALONG: NASCAR called Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Carl Edwards to its on-track headquarters Sunday morn ing to make sure those two didn’t continue their prob lems from Saturday’s Busch Series race. Edwards was leading the Carfax 250 during a green white-checkered overtime when Earnhardt Jr. bumped None able to knock Tiger off the top By Garry Smits Morris News Service MEDINAH, 111. - They all had their hopes of being the first player to knock Tiger Woods off the top of the lea derboard in a major champi onship on Sunday. Luke Donald began with the best chance, merely because he was tied with Woods for the 54-hole lead. Mike Weir was playing bet ter than anyone else in the field except for Woods and Donald, and unlike Donald, knew how to close a major under pressure. Sergio Garcia was hop ing to capture some of the Medinah magic he had in 1999; Shaun Micheel also was trying to summon past success in a PGA; and Adam Scott made the biggest move from behind. One-by-one, they all melt ed away on a perfect day for scoring and what would have been the perfect day to hoist the Wannamaker Trophy as the PGA Champion. Once again, Woods (68) proved to be the most potent closer since Jack Nicklaus. His record when leading or holding a share of the lead on a Sunday in majors: 12-0. His margin of victory: five shots over Micheel (69), at 18-under-par 270. Donald (74), Garcia (70) and Scott (67) tied for third at 12-under and Weir (73) finished alone in sixth at 11-under. As he drove the final lap under caution, Edwards drove down pit road, came back onto the track and slammed into the driver-side door of Earnhardt Jr.’s car. The winner had his hand out the window, waving at other drivers. The collision came within “four inches” of cutting Earnhardt Jr.’s hand, he said. Edwards compounded his problems - which cer tainly will lead to penalties this week by NASCAR - by grabbing Earnhardt Jr. in Victory Lane. He had to be restrained by NASCAR offi cials. According to NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston, both drivers were warned against retaliation during Sunday’s GFS Marketplace. Other sources said Edwards was warned that further pay backs may result in a sus pension. Earnhardt Jr. said he understands why Edwards was upset, but he was con cerned how he responded. “I was actually putting the pedal down to go to the outside of Carl. He wasn’t going. I was gaining and gaining, and I said, “I’ll just put it on the outside of Carl.’ We come off the corner and he was all out of shape. The 88 didn’t get into him. Us being around him the way we were, it had him out of control. He just never got into the gas. I think we were math dictated that he had the best chance. However, he failed to match Woods’ opening birdie, and barely missed a birdie-putt attempt at the second hole. Weir also had his chanc es. The winner of the 2003 Masters in a playoff with Len Mattiace, the left-hand ed Canadian birdied Nos. 3 and 5, with the latter birdie bringing him to within one shot of Woods at the time. As if on cue, Woods birdied his next two after that. But Weir birdied the 10th hole to keep himself within range. Then he started missing greens. He bogeyed three of those holes, and fell into sixth place. Micheel has rarely been in contention since but birdied three of four holes early in his back nine to stay close enough to Woods for the Nl EXPERIENCE? NO PROBLEM. I was trying to push him a little bit. When I got into him, he just climbed up on the nose and it spun him right out. “I didn’t mean to spin him out. I don’t go around wrecking people on purpose. I really don’t have a track record for doing that.” Edwards, as expected, had a different perspective of the accident. “My interpretation was we were having a good race and Dale kind of spun me out and ended up winning the race,” he said. “That’s racing. NASCAR had a nice meeting with me a while back and said they would take care of stuff like that. I guess they’re letting him keep the win. I know it’s exciting for the fans, but it’s frustrating for me. We had a great car.” Edwards said he was happy to hear fans react to Earnhardt’s bump and run victory, especially since Earnhardt Jr. is widely con sidered the most-popular driver in the sport. “That’s neat the fans are that objective.” Edwards said. “Dale Jr.’s real popular with the fans. It’s nice they have a little bit of a feeling over this. “I’m not out of control. I just wanted to make sure he knew I wasn’t happy. I couldn’t let him win the race with a perfect car and not give him a little something. I’m sure NASCAR is upset about that. That’s fine. They should be.” PIT STOP: Joe Nemechek, Jeff Gordon, Denny Hamlin, Kurt Busch, Ryan Newman, Bill Elliott, Michael Waltrip, David Stremme, Scott Riggs, J.J. However, his putter began to betray him after a birdie at No. 14. Garcia made two early bird ies, gave them right back, and then eagled the par-5 14th hole on a 30-foot putt. But by that point, the eagle only pulled him to within seven shots of Woods. Scott had the best chance late in the round. The 2004 Players Championship win ner carved up the front nine with a 5-under 31, then missed birdie-pqtt attempts on four of his next five holes. #1 Noon Buffet 1*75 Exit 136* 987-8877 Apply Online at ssNseiiierfeiisjttffl Or cat) 1800 44PRIDE 11-100447-7433) SCHNEIDER., pairclothßealtv d ML. 3B i HBH 00036365
