The last thing I want right now is another telephone call. No offense. Still, we need to talk about this invention of yours, the telephone. What were you thinking? Do you realize that 130 years later, your instru ment has become nothing but a way for big companies to send American jobs over seas, where cheaper labor can call me from halfway around the world to ask for my business? If not for the phone, those jobs would have stayed home. Moreover, I read that the companies get their employ ees to use Anglicized names to make it sound as though the calls are coming from Anytown, USA. I admit I don’t understand big business, Alex, but I do understand deception. If people are going to use your invention to contact me, they at least need to be honest. For instance, the other evening my phone rang at home. It was a young lady whom I had trouble under standing. I had to ask her to repeat herself. A lot. “Hello.” “Yes, good evening, Mr. Moore. I would like to speak to you about signing up for our Internet service.” “I’m happy with my service now. Thank you. Goodbye.” “Mr. Moore, I would like to tell you about our service.” “I’m sorry, I didn’t get your name.” Subscribe today Call 987-1823 ly was cited by the magazine Government Technology as one of the “Top 25 Doers, Dreamers and Drivers in the U.S. for innovative technol ogy projects.” Among his accomplishments, he cre ated the Georgia Virtual School that delivers, via Georgia Public Broadcasting, advanced placement courses to students in all Georgia high schools. Isn’t that just down the road from Seattle?” (Pause.) “I’m not sure, Mr. Moore. Doesn’t it say there on my account in your computer?” “Well, I’m not actually from the magazine itself. I’m with a subscription ser vice, and we were given your name.” “I see. Here’s the thing, Bob. When one of your peo ple called three nights ago, I told the woman to let me think about it. And when somebody called me the next night, I said no. And when someone called me last night, I said to please stop calling me. And now, you folks are still calling. What’s the deal?” “Mr. Moore, did I men tion that because you have been a faithful subscriber to Coping magazine, I can get you a great deal on Stop the World and Let Me Off monthly?” “Good night, Bob.” By the way, Alex, I con tacted the magazine the next day and subscribed again, at a much cheaper price than the subscription service offered. Not that you care. No, you invented the telephone and went on your merry way. Alfred Nobel didn’t do that much harm when he invent ed dynamite, and he even atoned for it by setting up a Peace Prize.
