run, newcomer Chase Ellis
connected in the air with
6-5 senior tight end Nash
Murph for a 22-yard touch
down.
With the football back on
the 40, sophomore Casey
Young went under center.
His big play came from his
own feet and a crushing
upfield block from Revis.
The block allowed the quar
terback, going towards the
home sidelines, to cut back
inside and give Westfield a
total gain of 32 yards.
Zach Young again cleaned
up the series taking a mis
direction play for a two-yard
score.
Jones hasn’t announced
which quarterback will be the
starter, but said Thursday
both will see playing time in
the season opener on Sept. 1
at John Milledge.
The coach is also excited
not only about the height
Murph brings to the receiv
ing corp, but said the Hornets
have more team speed in the
flanks than in the past sev
eral years.
The scrimmage ended with
Jarrod Taylor intercepting a
pass in the end zone.

to, or it’s going to be a short
column.
I was alluding earlier
about the 2004 season when
Georgia lost to Tennessee.
If you remember, that was
one week after the Bulldogs
beat LSU, defending co
national champions.
Those two weeks exposed
to me a big problem that
fans, and maybe even the
players and coaches them
selves, all get wrapped up in
prior to a season.
All spring and summer
long, the 2004 season for
the Red & Black was all
about getting back at LSU.
The year before, the Tigers
beat us on the last drive
down in Baton Rouge, then
really made a no-contest
out of the rematch in the
Southeastern Conference
championship game.
It made some folks won
der when was the last time
Georgia lost to the same
team twice in one season.
How about the last time
Georgia merely played the
same team twice in one
year?
You would have to go
back to the days of leather
helmets to find that answer
(try 1895, North Carolina,
lost both).
Even I got so caught up in
the get-back-at-LSU spirit
that I said the school would
have to change the spell
ing to LUS (pronounced
lose) because that’s what
would happen to them in
Athens. Arid we beat them,
big time. So much so there
had to be a hangover feeling

the following week against
Tennessee, or would you
say it’s hard to play football
when your head’s inflated
20 times its normal size?
Georgia did beat Florida
that year, but things just
weren’t normal down in
Gainesville. Ron Zook was
given his bad news earlier
in the week, and whipping
up on the Gators didn’t
seem quite as fun towards
the end.
Almost felt sorry for
the (can’t use that word).
Almost felt like playing
Florida Atlantic.
This year, as defending
league champions, it’s a
clean slate as far as I’m
concerned. And I don’t see
or hear of any of my breth
ren in the Bulldog Nation
singling out one game as
the be-all, end-all of the
season.
We’re more interested in
the quarterback jumble. I
like the running potential
if there are some holes and
space to run through. There
is one key receiver, Sean
Bailey, out for the season,
so that area will need some
help.
I have some schedule
cards that feature two top
defensive guys, Tony Taylor
and Quinten Moses. There’s
another one out there that
showcases the kickers. I say
it again, but punter Gordon
Ely-Kelso had to be the
MVP of that early winning
streak.
This is probably the point
in the column when most
folks are drawn away by the
baseball standings or racing
news.

that other school in the
state.
Get this for a bold predic
tion: Georgia Tech knocks
off Notre Dame on Sept. 2
in Atlanta.
There are two reasons for
me saying this.
One, the Yellow Jackets
own the weapons to score
against what most are call
ing a shaky Irish defense.
So if the upset does happen,
it could be one of those 44-
42 jobs.
Two, it’s just something
Georgia Tech is liable to
do. Think about the hype it
would create. GT goes on to
win the next two easy games
and shoots into the top
10 nationally. Then comes
Atlantic Coast Conference
play and ... a four-game los
ing streak. v
I say four games
because the slide ends at
home against the Miami
Hurricanes. The Jackets go
on to even the ACC record
with three more league
wins, and then to cap it all
off... yeah, right, not going
to happen, not in Athens,
not anywhere.
I pull all of this out of
recent history.
In 2003 Auburn was sup
posed to be the greatest in
all the land, until the Tigers
lose to Southern California
and Georgia Tech. For the
Jackets, all that’s forgotten
after a whitewash at the
hands of Duke.
If all this plays out, I will
not gloat of my prognos
ticating abilities. I know
it will be enough to keep
Chan Gailey around and get
GT that Charlotte bowl bid
they’ve long desired.
