Box 1910, Perry, GA 31069 50 YEARS AGO... ■ Aug., 1956 - Gable found not guilty A Houston County supe rior court jury returned a verdict of not guilty in the case of Gerniece Gable, 30, charged with the fatal shoot ing of her divorced husband. Gable collapsed as she completed her unsworn statement to the jury, the onlt evidence submitted by the four-man defense. She said that both she and her ex-husband, a Warner Robins attorney, reached into the glove compartment of her car about the same time in an effort to get possession of a .38 caliber revolver. The ACT is scored on a scale from 1-36. Superintendent Cox said the gains were even more impressive considering Georgia had a 7 1/2 percent jump in the number Of stu dents who took the test. Thirteen indi viduals submitted letters of nomination for O’Dell including counselors and Superintendent Danny Carpenter. Kristi Hess and Susan McGlashan, Perry Middle School counselors, wrote in a nomination letter: “Dr. Ruth O’Dell exemplifies the definition of “visionary” and works along with her counselors to do anything and everything that needs to be done for the children of Houston County. She has been instrumental in advocacy for systematic changes in the counseling program for our county.” Hess also stated, “She is our guide and stay, the one whom we look to for direc tion, encouragement and unfailing support. She is more than our ‘boss;’ she has truly become a friend and an advocate, not only for our profession, but also for our children that we serve and the institu tion of education that we value so deeply.” Criteria were rated on a five-point scale to deter mine to what degree the candidate met the crite ria. This included sup port of counseling ser vices aligning with the ASCA National Model, promotion of counseling and guidance services, implementation of new or additional services, and improvement of existing services. Previously, she was the principal of Lindsey Elementary for six years. Her service in Houston County schools began in January 1994 as a school psychologist. She has also served as Northside Middle School’s instructional coordinator and assistant principal. O’Dell resides in Perry with her husband Denton, a retired minis ter. Together they have two children and four grand children.
