The competitors are set to play 18 holes of stroke play each day with the field being cut to the low 70 and ties after 36 holes. The Georgia Senior Championship began in 1955 and ran until 1971 before a 15-year hiatus from 1972- 86. Other than the annual champions’ names, not much information is available on the Championship’s early years. The event was revived in 1987 and has since been contested at 16 different GSGA member clubs in 13 cities. This year marks the 20th annual Championship since its return. He won again in 1992 at Coosa Country Clilb in Rome. A total of 12 men have won the Skeadas Trophy since 1987. Bill Ploeger of Columbus and Spencer Sappington of Alpharetta have each won the event three times, with Sappington the current three-time defend ing champion. Macon’s Walt Fugate (1990, 1991) and Atlanta?s Joe Estes (1989, 1998) are the only other players besides Skeadas to win multiple titles. Estes and Sappington are both in the field this year. Entries were open to male amateur golfers age 55 and older as of Tuesday, who are GSGA members and Georgia residents. The field of 144 was determined by lowest USGA Handicap Indexes. Spencer Sappington of Alpharetta captured his third-straight Senior Championship at Albany?s Doublegate Country Club last September, edging the event’s only other three time winner, Bill Ploeger of Columbus, by one stroke. Sappington rebounded from an opening-round 76 to finish at 2-under-par 214 for the championship after subsequent rounds of 68-70. Ploeger had the opportunity on 18 to send the champion ship into a playoff, but his 13-foot birdie putt slid just an inch right of the hole, securing the outright title for Sappington.
