6B ♦ FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2006 Arrest sends Sims to scout team ATHENS - Antonio Sims is helping Georgia prepare for a 2006 season that he will be forced to spend on the sidelines. The safety is relegated to giving the defense looks on the scout team for its open er Saturday against Western Kentucky. The pain of being ineligible to compete this year sifter a spring suspen sion from the university has subsided but not entirely. “It hurts, man,” Sims said. “It hurts. I’m not going to sit here and tell you no lie. I’ve kind of gotten a better attitude about it throughout the summer and going into the first game. It kind of hurts me knowing I’m not going to be out there with those guys, knowing that I can’t play with the seniors that are leaving.” Sims is academically inel igible to play because the suspension left him without Tech to keep new starting cornerback a secret ATLANTA - Georgia Tech head coach Chan Gailey and defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta have decided on a starting cornerback opposite veteran Kenny Scott. The new starter’s identity will remain a secret until the Yellow Jackets open the sea son Saturday night against Notre Dame. Asked why, Gailey plead ed the football equivalent to the fifth amendment: Competitive advantage. “We’re going to keep it under wraps,” Gailey said. The coach did say all three cornerback candidates - Jahi Word-Daniels, Pat Clark, and Avery Roberson - will play extensively against the Irish. Word-Daniels entered the preseason as the front runner to win the spot. But Clark, who moved from wide receiver in the spring, performed well early on and took most of the starting snaps in the three scrimmages open to the pub lic. Sims’ transgressions included a November arrest for DUI and underage possession of alcohol and misusing a school parking permit and failing to complete commu nity service hours. “I learned a lesson as far as alcohol,” Sims said. “I stopped doing what I was doing wrong and I’m teaching the younger guys - the freshmen - because I consider myself a veteran now. I try to teach them right from wrong.” Defensive coordinator Willie Martinez said Sims has dealt with his situation “about the best that you could expect. He’s accepted Roberson has not worked extensively at corner in the preseason because of injury to safety Djay Jones. Roberson filled Jones spot for more than a week. Once Jones returned, Roberson split time between safety and cornerback. CHOICE TO CARRY LOAD: Georgia Tech’s Tashard Choice doesn’t look like a workhorse tail back. He hopes the Yellow Jacket coaches abuse him in Saturday night’s game against Notre Dame just the same. “If I get the chance to cany the ball until my legs fall off, I’m going to do it,” Choice said. “I’m hungry.” Choice’s starvation dates back four years. For now, he will take on the role of an opposing player each week. This week, it’s Western Kentucky running back Lerron Moore. “Even though he won’t be playing for us this year, he’s going to be helping us win games,” Martinez said. Weston gets nod in starting lineup: Kade Weston will be in the start ing lineup for his first col lege game. The redshirt freshman from Red Bank, N.J., will join sophomore Jeff Owens as the starting defensive tackles. “He’s been so resilient,” defensive line coach Rodney Garner said. We don’t have a rotation in mind right now.” GOOD OUT OF THE LOCAL remains in the rotation. Bulldogs land another from Missouri: Georgia has another high school pass-catch combo heading its way. Last year, Independence High School teammates Joe Cox and Mohamed Massaquoi made the jump from Charlotte, N.C., to Georgia. Now, it’s Rock Bridge High School tight end Aron White and teammate Logan Gray with plans to sign with Georgia. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound White gave his commitment to Bulldogs coach Mark Richt last week and revealed his decision publicly Wednesday. Gray announced his decision last month. “It was a factor, but I made my decision for me and not because of Logan,” White told the Columbia (Mo.) Daily Tribune. GATE: Georgia Tech is 3- 1 in season openers under Gailey, winning two of those handily and beating Auburn on the road in last season’s opener. The Yellow Jackets fol lowed up their only open ing-game loss - to Brigham Young on the road in 2003 - with an upset of Auburn. Gailey can’t explain why his team plays so well early other than for health rea sons. Linebacker KaMichael Hall had another explana tion. “With camp and spring practice, you get a little fed up with hitting your own teammates,” he said. “It’s the excitement of being able to go out there and hit some body else and show everyone the preparation you’ve put in.” At No. 2 in the polls, Notre Dame is the highest-ranked opening game opponent for the Yellow Jackets since they opened against No. 2 Alabama in 1980. How does a mom or dad know what’s best for a child from day to day? DR. DOBSON: The most dedicated parents go through times when they fear they aren’t responding properly to their children. They wonder if they’re overreacting or underre acting, being too strict or too lenient. They suspect that they’re making major mistakes that will haunt them later on. Fortunately, parents don’t have to do every thing right. We all make thousands of little mistakes - and a few big ones - that we wish we could reverse. But somehow, most kids roll with these blunders and come out just fine any way. Let me give you what I consider to be the key to good parenting. It is to learn how to get behind the eyes of your child, seeing what he sees and feeling what he feels. When you know his frame of mind, your response becomes obvious. For example, when he’s POWELL From page jB The sinister, beady-eyed moccasin, which repre sented my worst night mare, abandoned ship and jumped in the water. Was I relieved! Raising healthy children is not so much a science as it is a highly developed art, and most of us have the natural intuitive faculties to learn it. Take the time to observe those kids who live in your house. If you tune in closely to what they say and do, the feelings behind those behaviors will soon become apparent.
