SEPTEMBER 1,2006 Will Eagles finally break the curse? By MATTHEW BROWN Journal Sports Writer Eight months later, and it still stings. A curse was almost ex tinguished. A missing piece in the puzzle of a legacy was almost filled. Northside almost had it. The Eagles have a lot of wins and a lot of great players in its history of football, but no state champion ship. The 2005 season ended with Northside coming as close as ever only to see Statesboro celebrating with the big cup. There was nothing more for Conrad Nix and the Eagle coach es and returning players to do but think about the next season. But it still stings. "Sure it does," said Nix. "Foot ball, athletics are a big part of your life. God, family, and foot ball's right there. It's not just a job where you work eight hours, 12 hours, and go home and forget it. It's something you think about the rest of your life. "I don't want to overemphasize it or dramatize it. It's certainly there." s - .ms#■ »s' /tor*'' '' Mini a ■ Bm . m < > A m *3 J f A I %%%psjjggajgiL v **** JE? &?/ Jg r ’ A ' - T' <* , Hi I ‘ Bslfw jl w§ B Jfl ; WEBBP i "''ytwtMP**/'A J 2 j. So it would seem the time be tween December and August would be an unusually long offseason for the runners-up in Class AAAA. Eight months is quite a bit of time for the next op portunity to get another winning streak going, and Northside had won 14 in a row before dropping the last one. Nix said it was certainly a time of hard work and a continua tion towards their goals of being one of the best football programs See BREAK, page 10 PAGE 5
