Though the ultimate prize slipped out of their hands, all they could do was learn from the experience, get stron ger and dig deeper. Maybe it was a long offseason from the standpoint of thfe Ea gle roster of return ing talent. Yes, there were key seniors on the 2005 Northside team, but Nix and his staff are not short on big-time potential, and the time couldn't come soon enough to get them in full pads and make them game-ready. Nix takes a bit of the guarded approach, knowing that the po tential is good, but it's up to the players to do their jobs, maxi mize their strengths and respond well to what their coaches are teaching. "There are situations where you know what it takes to have success and win, you visualize that and then you see guys who are not quite get ting it there," he said. "You want to encour age them, push them to get where you need to be. "We're just pressing on. Anytime you get a little injury that side tracks things and im pedes your focus, it's tough. The guys have worked hard. By the time we play Hous ton County (Sept. 1), hopefully we'll have improved." During this offsea son, the Northside staff hasn't sat back and not thought about ways to be an even better foot ball team. For one thing, while Jacobi Rodrigues made big plays as the starting quarterback last year, there was another Eagle player grow ing and developing at that same position. Marques Ivory, now a junior, is getting that chance to be the No. 1 signal caller while Rodrigues, a senior, isn't being left out as he works out as an other receiver weap on. "That's off and on," said Nix, not com mitting completely to a new starter. "Hope fully it will work out that Marques can step in there and play it and Jacobi can go out and play wide receiv er. That's getting two good players on the field. We hope that happens. If it does, that's good. There are certain things that have to be done." Rodrigues does have the experience and still gets his share of practice work taking snaps. The receiver slot does require a different mindset when handling the different responsibili ties, which are more than just finding a INSURANCE AGENC^ i mM' 1009 Jernigan Street M W P.0.80x 650 m? "It's different for him," said Nix. "Go ing out there, running routes and catching the ball. It's like what he's done all of his life in his back yard or in the playgrounds. When you're having to make blocks and get off people who are trying to hold you up, those are things dif ferent and strange to him. He will have to get used to that. He's obviously a good ath lete and doing a good job." Ivory isn't hard to find on the football field due to his sure size. And there's some muscle there as he had the top Eagle bench press in the offseason at 350 pounds. "He's a sharp, in telligent guy," said Nix about his other attributes. "He's a strong kid. He's cer tainly not the runner that Jacobi is.
