The bears are abounding around at Houston Springs Garol Newhart teach es fellow residents at Houston Springs how to make hand-sewn bears - no sewing machine required. She began making these bears about nine years ago, when a soon-to-be best friend of hers taught a class on bear making at the Elks Lodge in Bonita Springs, Fla., where they both resid ed. After much frustration and many laughs, about a dozen women made their first bears and some of them, like Carol, have been mak ing bears ever since. Carol and her husband have been volunteering for the past 10 years at state parks and forest service camping areas in various states. Whenever camp hosts were interested, they made bears! Over the years, she has made at least 15 bears, for her grandchildren as well as for gifts. Her mother is in a nursing home in Atlanta, and her bear sits upon the cabinet there, looking down at her. Her grandchildren have bears dressed in then father’s clothes that she had saved over years, as these two bears were big enough to wear a toddler’s clothing. We have a large social committee that is current ly planning several events, including a Halloween party, Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas party and a New Year’s Eve party. Those who live far from their fami lies will always find someone to share the holidays with at their village clubhouse - they can celebrate with their community family. Cliff West heads the social committee and they are trying to have a major event approximately once a month. In between, there are all kinds of club meetings and impromptu parties in the clubhouse and out by the pool. There are also frequent golfing games and scrambles. This is an active community that likes to stay active!
