If you have a base sticker on your car, you can go yard saling on base. Military fam ilies are always on the move and often have to sell fur niture due to weight limits placed on them when they move, especially on overseas moves. You can find some great deals there. Second hand shops such as the Salvation Army and Goodwill can be good places to shop. Selection is best early in the week and in the mornings. You can find everything from designer clothes and accessories to home furnishings and decor. Remember, everyone owns used furniture. As soon as you take it out the door, it is used. Let someone else take the depreciation hit! I recommend renting a steam cleaner or hiring a professional cleaner to clean any upholstered furniture that you buy second hand. You don’t know if the former owner had pets with fleas or other issues. Some peo ple don’t like buying used upholstered furniture, but RICH From page j B One of the greatest treats of my simple childhood was shopping at the A&F| which had a spin rack filled with Golden Books. Mama, who can be as tight as a waistband after a big Thanksgiving din ner, never quibbled about buying books for me. She rarely wasted money on junk food but any book I wanted, was mine for the asking. As soon as we entered the gro cery store, I’d race over to the rack, spin it and study slowly until I picked a book. The bookmobile, designed to bring books to folks in rural areas, stopped at my house in the neighborhood for no child was more grate ful than I. Even now, I can let my senses take me back to the paper and leather smell of those wonderful books that crowded the aluminum shelves of that endearing vehicle. And whatever happened to bookmobiles? They’ve gone the way of mud pies, out-of-date with a world of children too busy to spend a lot of time reading. Oh, but the joys brought to me by Huck Finn, Tom Sawyer, and Nancy Drew. The summer before the fifth grade, I read Gone With The Wind and was downright sorrowful when I reached page 1,036. I hated for it to end. You’d probably be hard pressed to find even a college student who has read that industrial-strength tome now, not to mention an 11- year-old. It may sound old-fash ioned but I believe that creeks, adventures with dogs, books and mud pies still have important places in this world. See, such simple pursuits call upon the use of imagination and observa tion. It requires absorbing the world and fantasizing about the possibilities. It calls on reaching deep down within to create your own entertainment. And that, after all, better prepares one for life. How many of life’s complex prob lems can be solved by an iPod? Battling life demands imagination and observa tion, the kind of skills that can be learned from mak ing mud pies and reading books. Going through childhood photos recently, I discov ered something delightfully profound - I was an enor mously happy child. Auctions and estate sales are good places to get quality furnishings as well. Usually the occupant has passed on or has gone to a retirement home or down sized. This is also a great place to get used appliances. Elderly Folks usually don’t put a whole lot of wear and tear on washers, dryers, refrigerators or stoves like a family of five would. You can buy anything and every thing there, it is an entire household. This is also a good place to pick up lawn tools and such. If you go to an auc tion, arrive early enough to look everything over real well and write down what your top bid will be and then stick to it! Don’t get caught up in auction fever! If going to an estate sale, arrive early to get a good entry number. Also, come back on the sec ond day because the sellers are often willing to negotiate to clear the estate. Flea markets can also be a good source of home furnish ings and decor. Once again, arrive early for the best selection. Credit Union bulletins and the bul letin boards at your local grocer or employer’s bulle tin boards can also be a good girl and books, girl and lov ing family, girl dripping with creek water, girl on a carni val ride. It was so simple. I was deprived - if that’s what today’s kids would call it - of high tech stimulation. Still, I believe my childhood was picture-perfect. Looking back, I like the way it looks. When my husband and I were first married and really didn’t have much money, we shopped a lot at the thrift stores. We quickly learned that furniture made before the 1940 s was gener ally very well made and if you could refinish it or re-upholster it, it was restored to beauty and usefulness for another 10-40 years and would appreciate in value. What you buy in the fur niture store today will be worth much less in five-15 years. If you don’t have the skills or money to pay to get something refinished, a nice coat of paint can give new life to a dull finish. I guess that is why I love antiques and got into the business!
