HOUSTON DAILY JOURNAL Warner Robins opens in the Dome against Parkview By MATTHEW BROWN Journal Sports Writer What better setting for a battle of state high school football tradition than the Georgia Dome in Atlanta? Warner Robins High School faces off with Parkview High School in the Kell Powerade Classic on Saturday after noon. Parkview M Northside vs, Parkview, today, 2:45 p.m. has won four state championships under head coach Cecil Flowe and can call Atlanta Braves baseball star Jeff Franceour as one of its own. The Warner Robins Demons are a season removed from its most NORTHSIDE From page 6A Right at the end of the first quarter, the Bears’ Trenton Powell and Roddy Nixon made a stop behind the line and Gavin Whitefield chased down Brandon Jordan on a toss at the original line of scrimmage. With the score tied, Houston County was on its way to another three-and out on Prewett’s tackle for a loss on second down. The big mistake, though, was a personal foul on the Eagle DENIES From page 6A gave it up twice in the first half on a fumble and inter ception. Only Perry couldn’t capitalize. The Hornets answered the Trojans’ field goal with a drive that covered 70 yards on seven plays and featured mostly Austin Madruga churning up large chunks of yardage on each carry and ended with an 18-yard touch down pass from sophomore quarterback Chase Ellis to Zach Young. The Trojans, in turn, countered that on a 57-yard touchdown run. The Hornets then drove 69 yards, once again Madruga FAILS From page 6A was “proud of their effort and the kids never gave up. This game marks Warner Robins’ return to the 5-A classification, the one dominated by the likes of Parkview along with some of the Demons’ new region rivals named Lowndes and Valdosta. A win, or even a loss, in this non-region game has the potential to carry signifi cant weight in the final playoff analysis. After head-to-head, the next tie breaker in the region standings is the record in non-region games against schools in your class. Warner Robins head coach Bryan Way and his staff had a chance to see Parkview’s scrimmage last weekend. He reported seeing a team punter, keeping Northside’s series going in Bear ground at the 45. Northside earned its first first-down since a B. Jordan first-quarter touchdown on an Ivory-to-Rodrigues con nection for 12 yards to the 30. Deonta Jordan took a draw handoff at fullback 21 yards for lst-and-goal on the 9. The Bear defense held its ground at this point, but Pike made it count for the Eagles with his first varsity field goal in his first attempt. The 27-yarder went through offense played with the Red Devils in the first half, it disappeared in the second frame while Hawkinsville found its wings. Henry threw for touch downs, one in the third quarter and another in the fourth. He finished the night with 154 yards. On their next possession, Madruga capped off another long drive - and short in terms of burning time off the clock - by simply running over defenders and into the endzone. Following Joel Revis’ extra point - he was perfect on the night - Westfield was up 21-10. John Milledge made it 21-16 with another long run just before the half. That was with a failed two-point con version added in. The Hornets took the open ing kickoff to start the third quarter - no fumble here, but wait, it’s coming - and drove all the way down to the 8 before having to turn it over on downs. After a John Milledge fum ble - for a change - they took over on the 23. A few plays The squad will be in action next, Wednesday at Jones County. This will be the first ever meeting between the Demons and Parkview, and it’s one of football powers that take the same basic approach to the sport. “They’re fundamentally sound, they don’t do anything fancy and they don’t beat themselves,” said Way. The coach’s glowing scout ing report is impressive consider ing that Parkview lost one of the country’s top college prospects in running back Caleb King. The No. 3-rated back in the nation according to Scout.com, King transferred to Greater Atlanta Christian during the summer. He had around 2,700 yards rushing for the Panthers last year. good at 4:30 for a 10-7 lead. Another mistake for Houston County led to more Northside scoring. The Bear offense lost a fumble recov ered by Isaac Wilson on the HC 25. The Eagles ran four plays, starting with a remarkable grab by Kevyn Cooper near the sidelines for 19 yards. D. Jordan cashed it all in with his first touch down as an offensive player at 2:30. The PAT snap was hobbled, thus keeping the Eagles up front 16-7 at halftime. The Hornets’ defense held and forced the Trojans to punt again - a clean field - but Ellis threw an intercep tion several plays later. That in turn led to another John Milledge score. At that point it was 28-23 in favor of Westfield with 6:16 left in the game. Now, a fumble on the kick off. That gave the Trojans the ball on the Hornets’ 39. They drove it down to the 1 where it still appeared Westfield might pull it off. The Hornets stopped John Milledge on three straight tries - all run attempts - before the Trojans threw a short pass on fourth down over the line for the score. This time they made the two-point conversion but with two minutes left, Westfield was unable to drive down for a tying or winning score. on the calendar for Thursday was Houston County at Rutland. But that’s not of any concern to Warner Robins. “They have a good-looking line backer that also plays some run ning back,” said Way. “Their two cornerbacks are good, and they have big offensive and defensive linemen like they always do. I’m sure they will miss (King), but have plenty to replace him.” Like Warner Robins, Parkview concentrates its offense on the run ning game. Way said it’s a power offense that uses different forma tions and shifts aimed at getting a defense out of alignment. The Panthers throw the ball out of the play action with efficiency, Way said, but otherwise they are out to get five to six yards a carry on the ground. for that first touchdown thanks to a punt of just 24 yards. I like to think we do things the same way. We rely on execution, though we’re more of a misdirec tion team.” Way said, as for the Demons’ progress leading up to the sea son opener, he’s seen a tremendous amount of improvement in all areas and the practices this week were great. “We’re excited about it,” said Way. “This is the winningest program in 5-A over the last 10 years ... not by accident.” VhHß<> tackles in the first period, including a trip on Dodson on third down late in the opening period.
