Gibbs finishes first at Dog Days Meltdown
Other Perry club members Myers, Ayer notch third in their class

Mary Ann Gibbs not only reached a
milestone at home (see related story),
she was the best of the bunch for
the Perry Horseshoe Pitcher’s Club
Aug. 26 at the Dog Days Meltdown in
Cordele.
Gibbs, pitching from the A Class,
went 5-1 in the inaugural tournament.
She also finished with a ringer percent
age of 56.82, connecting for 125 ringers
out of 220 shoes pitched.
Larry Myers, also of the Perry club,
pitched in the same class. He finished
third at 3-2 - same amount of losses as
the second place finisher but one less
win.
He had a ringer percentage of 44.50
percent. He had 89 ringers out of 200
shoes pitched.

won’t drive the No. 6 Ford at
Roush next year - a ride he’s
had since the 1988 season -
and most people believed that

state park quota
hunt applications

SOCIAL CIRCLE - In an
effort to meet customer needs,
the Georgia Department of
Natural Resources, Wildlife
Resources Division has
extended the deadline for
deer and State Park quota
hunt applications until 11:59
p.m. Sept. 5.
In some cases, the hunter
has a pre-existing account.
Those who applied for an alli
gator, deer (including State
Park), turkey or waterfowl
quota hunt last season (2005-
2006) have an account cre
ated for them that includes
their current quota hunt sta
tus. Additionally, those who
have either recently complet
ed a hunter education course
or purchased a Georgia hunt
ing license through the WRD
website have an account that
has been updated to reflect
their current quota hunt sta
tus. Hunters that do not fall
into one of those two catego
ries must set up an account
prior to applying for a quota
hunt.

at the tournament were John Rackley,
Rick Thompson, Chuck Poole, Buddy
Ayer, Maureen Thompson and Jerome
Kennedy.
Rackley pitched in the B Class where
he finished fifth. He had a record of
2-3 and a ringer percentage of 40.50
percent after connecting for 81 ringers
out of 200 shoes.
Thompson and Poole contended from
the C Class and finished fourth and
sixth, respectively.
Thompson was 3-2, which was the
same record those in second and third
had. However, he was edged out on
ringer percentages. Louie Bonner in
second had a 34.50 ringer percentage.
Roger Stratton in third had one of
32 percent, and Thompson’s was 29
percent. He had 58 ringers out of a
possible 200.

during the Dog Days Meltdown held in
Cordele Aug. 26.
Anyone who is interested in orga
nized horseshoe pitching held in Middle
Georgia can come by Rozar Park in
Perry Monday evenings at around 5:30
p.m. Pitching starts about 6 p.m.

Robby Gordon confirmed
this week he attempted to buy
half of Robert Yates Racing
recently, but the deal appar
ently fell through in the last
couple weeks. Sources close
to Yates confirmed Sunday
Martin - apparently with
support of Jack Roush - also
tried to buy Yates during the
summer. Negotiations went
so far that Yates had an
inventory completed to show
the exact worth of his racing
operation.
Robert Yates Racing
said they would make an
announcement on a new driv
er in about a week. They’ve
already hinted it would be a
veteran racer.

only the driver with the
most wins moves into the
playoffs ... The stars came
out for Sunday’s race.

The California Speedway
is an old stomping ground
for Schwarzenegger, who
filmed the final scene for

KAHNE RALLIES BACK IH: The
only way Kasey Kahne could
get back into contention to
make the final cut for the
Chase for the Championship
was to lead a lot of laps and
win Sunday night’s Sony
HD 500 at the California
Speedway.
That’s exactly what he
did.
Kahne led 130 laps, none
more important than the final
two when his Dodge Charger

Poole finished 1-4 and had 51 ringers
out of 200 for a 25.50 ringer percent
age.
Ayer and Maureen Thompson pitched
in the D Class and finished third and
fifth, respectively.
Ayer was 3-2 - he lost out on second
via ringer percentages.
He connected for 41 ringers out of a
possible 200 for a ringer percentage of
20.50 percent.
Thompson was 1-4. She had 50 ring
ers out of 200 for a 25 percent ringer
percentage.
And finally, Kennedy finished fourth
in the E Class. He was 2-3 and lost out
on second and third via ringer percent
ages. He had 37 ringers and an 18.50
ringer percentage.
Next up for members of the local
club was league play Monday.

of the club and in the release. “Come

of the Georgia Horseshoe Pitcher’s

lievable night. This Dodge
Dealers Dodge was fast all
night. This was the only way
we could do it: lead the most
laps and win the race.”
A couple of mistakes shuf
fled two early leaders to the
back. Kahne recovered from
a speeding penalty on pit
road on the 157th lap that
dropped him back to 24th
place; Jeff Gordon didn’t
make a comeback after mak
ing an unscheduled stop for
tighten some loose lug nuts
on Lap 176 that dropped him
back to 25th.
