2A ♦ WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2006 Warner Robins to host policy forum Special to the Journal ATLANTA - Earlier this summer the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education and the Georgia School Boards Association presented 11 education pol icy forums across the state for local school board and state legislative candidates. More than 200 people attended the half-day tutori als. As a result of that suc cess, the two organizations will provide two additional opportunities. The first will be presented Sept. 13 at Middle Georgia Technical College in Warner Robins followed by one Sept. 14 at Atlanta Technical College. Both meetings will begin at 12:30 p.m. and end at approximately 4:45 p.m. There is no charge to Centerville Rotary works to ensure literacy Special to the Journal Did you know that Friday is International Literacy Day? Currently, the world is in year three of what was pro claimed the Literacy Decade by the United Nations in 2003. Today, although there are almost 4 billion literate peo ple in the world, another 860 million people remain illiterate. Approximately two-thirds of those are women. Perhaps the greatest tragedy is, according to a release, that 100 million of the world’s children have no access to schools or educa tion. “Literacy for all continues to be an elusive goal and ever-moving target. One of the major obstacles to world literacy is a lack of resourc tf es. To that end, Rotary International asks each of its clubs to sponsor a com munity literacy program. At its weekly meetings mornings, each guest speak er is asked to write words of encouragement about read ing and learning and then sign a new book purchased with club funds. The books are pre sented to the Centerville Elementary School, Eagle Springs Elementary School and Thomson Middle School for their libraries. The club has purchased more than 100 books for their libraries since its charter meeting in 2004. Centerville Rotarians strongly encour age everyone to find ways, no matter how large or small, to help create a literate com munity, society and world.
