Arrest, jail and beyond
Dear Mr. Rpckefeller,
My son was arrested
week ago, following
a traffic stop, how do I get
him out of jail?
Dear Reader, I’m sorry to
hear about your son’s arrest.
I am often pained by the
agony families endure when
a loved one is arrested - this
does not seem fair to me.
Securingyour son’s release
depends upon the charges,
the court the case will be
referred to, and the arrested
person's criminal history,
through a “bond” process.
This involves you pay
ing money (in full or in the
form of a fee to a bondsman)
or security interest in real
estate to the local Sheriff to
secure your son’s promise to
appear.
If he was arrested on fed
eral charges, there may be
a slightly different form of
bond, called a “signature”
bond, where your son would
only have to provide a prom
ise of paying money (no actu
al payment would be made).
If your son shows up, as
required, at the end, your
money would be returned
to you (except if a bond fee)
and/or the real estate lien
would be lifted.
If your son fails to appear,
you could lose everything!
For this reason, you will
need to KNOW that your
son will appear in court as
required.
Your question does not
tell me about his history or
charges, but I have a couple
of educated guesses.
What does
Ihave read about a new
technology: Open-fit
hearing aids. What does
that mean?
Hearing devices are
designed to help someone
with a hearing loss hear
sound better.
If the person wearing the
device does not like the way
his/her own voice sounds,
compliance with usage is
usually low or not at all.
A hearing aid can only aid
when it is worn.
Therefore, the manufac
turers of hearing devices
have developed a product
that will help with usage:
the open fit.
Several different manu
facturers (Oticon, Widex,
GN Resound, Beltone,
Seimens, Phonak, etc.) have
researched the best way to
make hearing aids sound
and look better to the user.
These devices are min
iaturized with a slim tube
that is practically invisible.
Since the earpiece is small, it
does not fill up the ear canal
allowing for more natural
sound.
Developing a plan the key to quit smoking
By STATE POINT
MEDIA
Even though we all know
it’s bad for us, many peo
ple keep smoking because it
seems so hard to quit.
According to Dr. Michael
Cummings, Chair of Health
Behavior at Roswell Park
Cancer Institute, the keys
to quitting are deciding you
want to quit, setting a quit
date and developing a plan
that will increase your odds
of success.
“Get help if necessary,”
says Cummings, “There are
some great tools that you
can use available online,
over the phone, and in the
drug store.”
Approved medications that
can help include nicotine
patches, gums and lozenges,
and two non-nicotine medi
cations - Zyban and Chantix.

had been entitled to hold
him without a bond for 48
hours (the arresting officer
had that long to obtain a
felony warrant).
This could have been from
a “bail” scheduled kept at
the jail or after your son
went before the magistrate
for a “first appearance”
within this 48 hours.
Which leaves a few pos
sibilities - he could be in
jail on new felony charges
or on a probation or parole
warrant.
As to the latter, there is
no formal bail or bond pro
cedure for a probation or
parole violation (other than
the requirement of a valid
arrest warrant).
Only a Superior Court
Judge can grant bond on a
open-fit hearing mean?
The mini-hearing devices
are virtually invisible. The
processor fits behind the ear
(or pinna) and is so discrete
that most observers will not
see it until the user chooses
to show it off.

comfortable. Many users

probation warrant; only a
parole officer can agree to
let a parole violator out of
jail; in either case, only a
“full” jail would likely result
in any type of bond being
granted.
If he is in jail for new
felony charges, the sever
ity of the charges, his ties
to the community, and any
criminal history, would all
be considered by a Superior
Court Judge at a bond hear
ing held within roughly two
weeks of his arrest. T
his bond hearing would be
the first court hearing where
he would be constitutionally
entitled to an attorney and
could qualify for a court
appointed attorney.
It is a “critical stage” of
the proceeding and your son
should not go to court with
out an attorney, preferably
the best attorney the family
can afford.
Hopefully, this explana

the process. Again, I know
that you are in a lot of pain
right now; try to keep your
focus and I hope things will
turn out for the best.

Spirits die at the door
Do the spirits of your
employees die at the
door? Do folks come
to work with dread?
D 6 they bolt out that door
at quitting time? Do they
mostly talk about what
they’ve done and what
they plan to do away from

The title of this article

the 1998 book by Ken

from the “Prologue” by
Peggy Sinclair, the plant
manager of the turnaround
success story described in
the book.
So, what can you do if
your answer to the open

if your answer is closer to
“No,” what can you do to
improve your situation?
You can use this article as
a checklist to see how you
might improve from what

Having a problem with your big toe?
The hardest working toe of the foot
is the big toe. The big toe supports
most of your body’s weight during
the movement of walking. Walking or
standing can be affected if there becomes
a problem with the big toe. The most com
rtion problem, which occurs with the big
toe, is known as the bunion.
A bunion is excess
or misaligned bone in
the joint. A bunion can
change the shape of
your foot making foot
wear difficult to fit for
comfort. Bunions can be
treated by shifting soft
tissue, shifting the bone,
or removing the bone
altogether.
What causes bun
ions?
A bunion is a bony
bump usually near the joint at the base
of the big toe but also can develop on the
fifth (little) toe. Bunions can be caused by
various reasons.
Some common reasons are joint damage
caused by arthritis or an injury. Too much
flattening of the foot may cause the toe
joint to move beyond normal range.
Many bunions are a combination of posi
tional or structural bunions. Positional
bunions (mild) joint enlarges as the new
bone grows. Stretching of the joint’s outer
covering causes force to push the big toe
toward the smaller one. Eventually, the big
toe is pulled further out of alignment due
to inside tendons tightening.
