HOUSTON DAILY JOURNAL Having to pay 27 cents for a cup of water Because of my intoler ance of caffeine in cof fee and tea, I often order water when I go to a restaurant. There has never been any charge reflected on my bill for water. I also have ordered water at McDonald’s and wasn't charged. Recently, however, Beverly and I stopped at the Dairy Queen in Byron and ordered two milkshakes. I asked if I could also have a small cup of water. The clerk told me there would be a charge of 27 cents. Water is essential to life on earth. While we can live more than a month without food, we can’t live more than a week without water. A human baby is 75 percent water and an adult is 65 percent water. Older members of our society are about 50 percent water, which gives rise to the theory that people might live longer and remain healthier ing that she give the remedy a try. When Margaret finally got a chance to squeeze in her thoughts, she calmly spoke. “I have a question I’d like her to get answered for me. Have her to ask what Margaret can do.” Silence stilled the room for a moment then the state ment was repeated. “Have her ask what Margaret can do.” I was puzzled over the statement but agreed to check with Joan as to what Margaret could do. Margaret’s next statement made me feel like I should be soaking my head in hot water, though that was far from her intentions. “Have her ask what Margaret can do,” she said. “Tell her that Margaret has no feet.” My lack of consideration was inexcusable. Grasping for words, an attempt was made to apologize. However, Margaret being the person she was, required no apol ogy. The fact that Margaret program is available. Being without legs was no hand icap at all to this devout Christian. The loss of her legs did not leave Margaret incomplete. Walking daily with Christ, “rooted and built up in Him, stabilized in the faith” and abounding with thanksgiv ing, she was a completely whole person. (Reference Colossians 2: 6 & 7) Margaret Newton was a wife, mother, homemaker and Christian Radio Station WAVC employee. She was actively involved in church work and an inde pendent bilateral amputee who made her way around on artificial limbs. She was a shining example of a complete being . . . so complete in Christ that a physical loss never dis tracted from her Christian stability. Strong-willed daughter tests patience of parents QUESTION: My wife and I have a strong willed child who is incredibly difficult to handle. I honestly believe we are doing our job about as well as any parents could do under the circumstanc es, yet she still breaks the rules and challenges our authority. I guess I need some encourage ment. First, tell me if an especially strong willed kid can be made to smile, give, work and cooperate. If so, how is that accomplished? And second, what is my daughter’s future? I see trouble ahead, but don’t know if that gloomy forecast is justified. DR. DOBSON: There is no question about it, an especially willful child such as yours can be difficult to manage even when her par ents handle her with great skill and dedication. It may take several years to bring her to a point of relative obedience and cooperation within the family unit, but it will happen. While this training pro gram is in progress, it is important not to panic. Don’t try to complete the transformation overnight. Treat your child with sin cere love and dignity, but require her to follow your leadership. Choose carefully the mat ters that are worthy of con frontation, then accept her challenge on those issues and win decisively. Reward every positive, cooperative gesture she makes by offering your attention, affection and verbal praise. Then take two aspirin and call me in the morning. QUESTION: As an advocate of spankings as a disciplinary tool, don’t you worry about the possibility that you might be contributing to the incidence of child abuse in this country? DR. DOBSON: Yes, I do LllH ne ’’ t/PERRY FLORIST 734 Main Street Perry, Georgia 31069 987-1656 800-516-1004 1812 II.S. 41N. When Jesus asked the Samaritan woman at the well for a drink of water, she asked why a Jew would make a request of a hated Samaritan. Jesus said, “If you knew who it is that says to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” worry about that. One of my frustrations in teaching parents has been the diffi culty in achieving a balance between permissiveness and oppression. The tendency is to drift toward one extreme or another. Let it never be said that I favor harshness of any kind with children. It can wound the spirit and inflict perma nent scars on the psyche. No subject distresses M Dr. James Dobson Focus on the Family children are being commit ted day after day. It is hard to believe justhow cruel some moth ers and fathers can be to defenseless, wide-eyed kids who don’t understand why they are hated. I remember the ter rible father who regularly wrapped his small son’s head in the sheet that the boy had wet the night before. Then he crammed the tot upside down into the toi let bowl for punishment. I also think of the disturbed mother who cut out her child’s eyes with a razor blade. That little girl will be blind throughout her life, knowing that her own mother deprived her of sight! Unthinkable acts like these are occurring every day in cities and towns around us. In fact, it is highly prob able that a youngster living within a mile or two of your house is experiencing abuse in one manner or another. Brian G. Are you greater than out father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?” Jesus answered and said to her, “Whosoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. Given the scope of the tragedy we are facing, the last thing I want to do is to provide a rationalization and justification for it. I don’t believe in harsh disci pline, even when it is well intentioned. Children must be given room to breathe and grow and love. But there are also harmful circumstances at the permissive end of the spectrum, and many par ents fall into one trap in an earnest attempt to avoid the other.
