Rosean Finney, Destinie Williams, and Kelcey Coates make purple and turquoise rib

Hodac’s Teen HQ spread awareness
By KRISTY WARREN
Journal Staff Writer
The students of Teen
Headquarters are being
proactive this month in tak
ing steps to raise awareness
of suicide and Sickle Cell
Anemia.
National Suicide
Prevention Week is Sunday-
Sept. 16. The students
have made ribbons in the
colors of suicide preven
tion, said Kuwana Johnson,
Educational Specialist at
the center. They will wear
the purple and turquoise
ribbons to school next week
to support suicide preven
tion. They have also been
researching the problem
and creating a fact sheet to
distribute that week.
In a press release, Hodac
points out that talking

about suicide does not
cause someone to become
suicidal. In 2002, suicide
was the 11th cause of death
in the U.S. and rates among
youth have increased more
than 200 percent in the last
50 years.
Hodac asks that every
one join them for Suicide
Prevention Week and
“together we can reduce
the number of suicides in
the U.S. by promoting sui
cide prevention and aware
ness.”
This month, the students
of Teen Headquarters are
also working to raise aware
ness of Sickle Cell Anemia,
as this is National Sickle
Cell Awareness Month.
The Sickle Cell Disease
Association of America
wants “the public to reflect
on the children and adults
residents (they can move
just like I did). City offi
cials should not be able to
pass any additional taxes
(we already pay 1.19 mills
for fire service) onto county
residents!
Can any politician come
up with any idea better
than: “How can we get
more money out of the tax
payers?”
Forget authorizing a
study with our tax dollars
so you can increase our
taxes more, ask the county
residents if they actually
want “enhanced fire pro
tection” aka another prop
erty tax increase. Let us
