The cost is SSO per player, which includes lunch, door prizes and more - first place gross and net teams each receive S3OO. Mulligans will be sold/strokes will be given. HoCo cheer squad to hold open house/barbecue Houston County’s Cheer Booster Club and Port-A-Pit BBQ will host a school Open House/BBQ dinner Sept. 19 from 4-7 p.m. in the school caf eteria. Demonettes go 5-0, win Evans tournament From staff reports Warner Robins High School’s Demonettes struck some gold over the weekend, win ning the tourna ment hosted by Evans High School with a perfect 5-0 record. Bears cruise past Knights By MATTHEW BROWN Journal Sports Writer It was a good night to be a lineman wearing silver and black. Houston County High’s football Bears punished W 7 i n d s 0 r Forest of Savannah 3 5-6 Saturday at MeConnell- Talbert fife Houston County 35, Windsor Forest 6 Stadium. The Bears won for the first time in 2006 in what was essentially a one half game. Houston County scored 35 unanswered points in the first half, which brought on the run the-clock rule and made the second half go by in a flash. Behind a senior offen sive line, the Bear running backs had plenty of room to amass almost 200 yards in the ground for the first 24 minutes. Who were they? Starting with Reggie Smith at center, there’s Zach Polk, Michael Cuppett, Jimmy Bailey, Dylan Thompson and Ben Collins. With their help, DJ Dodson • had 76 yards on nine carries with two touchdowns and Eric O’Neal gained 68 yards on nine carries with two scores. But there was a whole other line of scrimmage that played in dominating fashion for the home team. The Houston County defen sive line, especially late in the first half, had some body in the Windsor Forsest backfield before the Knights could even get their play started. Windsor Forest ran 22 offensive plays in the first half, 10 of which ended on a tackle for lost yards. Sports WARNER ROBINS DEMONS Lauren Graham took a strong bat on the road trip, turning in an aver age for the tourney of .529. She had two home runs during the Houston County game, one being a grand slam. Cherie White hit .385 for the Demonettes. The Knights, the first of three non-region foes for the Bears from their 5-A classification, won the coin toss but deferred their option for the second half. After the opening kickoff, Houston County began a 60-yard scoring drive that set the tone for the rest of the evening. It took five plays for the Bears to cover that dis tance. The longest play was Dodson’s 24-yard touch down run at 9:45 showing on the quarter clock. Taylor Jones booted the PAT kick through for the 7-0 edge. Houston’s interior defen sive front didn’t waste time pushing Windsor Forest ball carries in the wrong direc tion. Princeton Dean and Gavin Whitfield made it 3rd-and-13 from the WF 19. Three plays later, O’Neal blasted up the middle on a 25-yard scoring run. Only five minutes of game-time expired as Jones kicked the Bears to a 14-0 lead. The Knights gained two first downs on their next series to the WF 48. Chris Prewett, however, run a quarterback bootleg for a two-yard loss and Roddy Nixon had a 12-yard sack on third down. Later in the quarter, Dean recovered a fumble on the Knight 27. The third play of the ensuing series was also the first of the second quarter. Dodson powered his way right tackle for an 11-yard touchdown. Jones put in his third straight PAT (21-0). Coach Brenda Arnette’s top defen sive player of the tourney was Jenson Barrett. She played shortstop and had no errors. Warner Robins won its pool, which put it in the gold bracket among other unbeaten pool teams. Warner Robins beat Harlem 3-2. Amber Conlon was the win ning pitcher with eight strikeouts. Then the Demonettes edged South Effingham by a similar 3-2 score. Kristen Graham was the winning pitcher, and like Conlon she too tal lied eight strikeouts. Against the host school, it was A blitzing Prewett got help from Dexter Holman to again send the Knights into negative territory. Josh Nelson returned the punt to the Houston 49, but the home team would lose this series on a fumble. O’Neal would get his sec ond touchdown with 2:07 left in the half. It finished a series of eight plays and 61 yards with three first downs. Lydel Jones had his best gain on an inside reverse. He went between two blockers for 29 yards to the Knight 22. From the 17, O’Neal put on vintage running back moves to get the six points. Jones kicked in the sev enth. Graham was back in the pitcher’s circle, and she bested Evans 2-1 behind 13 strikeouts. She was also the winning pitcher against Houston County. Finally, the Demonettes claimed the championship against North Oconee 5-1. Conlon pitched her sec ond win. Warner Robins improved to 12-2- 1 overall. Up next are back-to-back Region 1-AAAAA contests at home. First, Coffee County visits Thursday, then Lowndes plays the Demonettes in a Friday tilt. Waraer Robins boys llpst, NS llrls second In 2-mile Classic Special to the Journal Warner Robins continued to roll and Northside’s girls aren’t doing too shabby, either. The Demons won their sec ond meet of the season, cap turing the Two-mile Classic held Saturday in Cochran. For the Lady Eagles, it was at least their second runner-up finish, and at the same venue. As far as the boys again, Warner Robins finished with 47 points. Houston County was second with 81, followed by Bleckley County with 99, South Effingham with 127' and the Eagles in fifth with 147. Baldwin County was sixth with 180, Southeast Bulloch was seventh with 227, Montgomery County was eighth with 259, Toombs County was ninth with 270 and Dublin rounded out the top 10 with 293. Dodge County with 415 was 11th, Jackson High 12th with 422, Hawkinsville 13th with 521 and East Laurens 14th with 534. Marc Kushinka led the Demons individually by fin ishing second and in 11:26. Karl Burkhardt for Warner Robins was fifth at 11:46, Jeffrey Nakayam ninth at 12:15, Madison Holland 14th at 12:27 and Matthew Drapeau 17th at 12:40. As far as the girls, Bleckley County was first with 49 points. The Lady Eagles had 76 and just edged out the Demonettes who had 77. South Effingham was fourth with 98. Houston County was listed as fifth, although it, too, had 98 points. Dublin was sixth with 223, Toombs County seventh with 249, Southeast Bulloch eighth with 265 and Macon County ninth with 396. Brittney Stewart led the See CLASSIC, page jB Panthers take first at lift meet Special to the Journal Perry’s boys cross country team won the Tift Invite this weekend and, per head coach Jerry Gatzke, by a “wide margin.” There were 13 teams in all, Gatzke said, of .which the Lady Panthers finished ninth. They were led by Stephanie Smith. The boys, Gatzke said, were led by Ontorio Johnson who finished fifth, Devin Simpson who crossed in sev enth and Nicholas Felder, who was ninth. SECTION B
