a good matchup for us,”
said Johnson on the visiting
Patriots of Lilburn. “They
have a lot of kids who are
really, really fast. We are
worried about the speed.
So far they have big-played
everybody.”
It’s been a shaky season,
though, so far for Berkmar.
The Patriots had a 14-0 lead
on Luella late in the third
quarter but lost 28-14 on the
strength of fumbles.
They came back with a
31-17 win against North
Forsyth.
“(The coach) * did some
things different in the second
ball game,” said Johnson.
“They looked a lot better.
“They run the veer, and
we’re worried about that.
They have two or three
backs who can go all the way
at any time.
“The quarterback’s real
ly good ... a great running
quarterback. If you don’t
tackle him, he’s gone. They
have a great receiver who
plays DB.”
The Berkmar defense is
one that lines up even at 4-4
and looks to create problems
with the blitz, Johnson said.
Two of the touchdowns
against North Forsyth were
on fumbles recovered and
returned to the end zone.
Otherwise, Johnson said
Berkmar looks for the big
plays out of that veer triple
option set.
He said it’s a case where
you might stop a few plays
in a row for short gain, but
the minute someone misses
an assignment, six points
are on the board.
“The veer is an offense
where you don’t have to
block as many people,” said
Johnson. “You leave people
unblocked, you read, so it
works to your advantage.
We have to be real disci
plined and everybody has to
do their job. If my job is to
take the fullback, 'take the
fullback.”

win that evened the overall
record at 1-1. Johnson’s had
two good games in a row
from the defensive line, but
he said the offensive front
still has some work to do,
especially after the injury to
Cuppett.
“I thought our running
backs did a good job of find
ing holes and getting in the
end zone,” said Johnson
about DJ Dodson and Eric
O’Neal, each of whom scored
twice in the first half of the
Windsor Forest game. “We
didn’t do bad on the offen
sive front, we just need to do
better.”
The defensive play was
all about penetration into
the Windsor Forest back
field. Sometimes the football
could have been handed off
to a Bears lineman who was
there at the same time as
the opposing running back.
Houston recorded 10 tackles
for a loss out of 22 plays in
the first half.
Roddy Nixon had one of
those tackles, a quarterback
sack. He’s also the player
designated to go for blocks
on the punt return team. He
didn’t block one Saturday,

snap and took the ball a
short distance for a touch

“Roddy’s played real well
so far,” said Johnson. “Who’s

Princeton Dean and Trenton

offensive line.”
Houston County and
Warner Robins High are the
only two teams in Region
1-AAAAA with three non
region games in SA. In order
to do this, though, both
schools had to look up to
Atlanta and Savannah for
opponents since Middle
Georgia is lacking in the
state’s highest classifica
tion.
If somebody can go 3-0,
or even 2-1, it would benefit
that school in a tiebreaker
situation for state playoff
qualification and/or seeding
at the end of the season.
