After Meredith left the system last year to take a similar job in Mississippi, regents decided to sell the chancellery and instead give Meredith’s successor, Chancellor Erroll Davis, a housing allowance of $72,000 a year. The University System of Georgia ended up getting less than what it initially wanted for the property. The house, which was owned by the university sys tem’s foundation before the system bought it in 2003 for a shade under $1.9 million, was originally listed at $2.45 million, according to Peter Hickey, assistant vice chan cellor for facilities. The price was lowered to $2.2 million in April before being sold to a private individual for an even $2 million. According to information given to the board’s academ ic affairs committee, which approved the major Tuesday, Savannah State expects as many as 45 students to enroll in the program by the beginning of its third year. The major is patterned after a similar major offered at Virginia Commonwealth University. Tour focuses on production areas ALBANY (AP) - The 20th annual Georgia Peanut Tour began Tuesday with a focus on areas that are better known for blueber ries and Vidalia onions than peanuts. During the three-day tour, the 125 participants will visit fields in new produc tion areas such as Appling County, a leader in the state’s blueberry industry, and Toombs and Emanuel counties, where farmers are famous for sweet Vidalia onions. The elimination of a restrictive peanut commod ity program in 2002 created opportunities for farmers who previously could not grow peanuts competitively and they have responded. Voter IDs goes well under first election JEFFERSONVILLE (AP) - Voters cast ballots for the first time Tuesday under Georgia’s new voter identi fication law, and all but one inet the requirements, elec tions officials said. The Democratic runoff lor a seat on the Twiggs County school board was the first time the law requiring Georgia voters to present a photo ID was enforced. Under the law, displayed on two yellow posters at the pre cinct entrance, voters must present a driver’s license, a government employee ID dr other identification issued by government agencies, a U.S. passport, military ID or a tribal identification card. Originally, the July 18 pri mary was to be Georgia’s first to require a photo ID, but a U.S. District Court judge temporarily blocked enforcement of the law after civil rights groups filed a court challenge arguing it discriminated against poor, elderly and rural voters. The injunction expired bfefore Tuesday’s runoff, although whether the state will be allowed to enforce the law for special elections later this month and the November general election is still being litigated. County election superin tendent Marette Fair said the vote went smoothly, with more than 200 ballots cast. But she said she was at the Twiggs County Center when one man (jhme in with a Social-Security card bdt no photo identification. k ‘He was driving a vehicle, so that’s what’s amazing mte about it,” Fair said. The man was given the option of casting a provisional bal lot and presenting proper identification at the Board of Elections within two days, said poll manager Rhonda Iksl* ilPllilllil THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 14,2006 ♦ iTwin rS.et - $ 99 00 JD.ueemS.et - $ 159 00 iKing&et - $ 229 00 Allen. “He said he wouldn’t have it in two days,” Allen said. “So he left.” Angela Bloodworth and Lillie Thomas rode together to the Jeffersonville precinct at the senior center. After learning photo identification was required, Thomas rum maged through her purse. “I have a hard time every time because I forget,” Thomas said after pull ing out the contents of her handbag and finally finding her driver’s license. “I think it’s wrong,” Bloodworth said. “Because there are elderly people out there who can’t afford to get a picture ID.” Voter Annette Stephens disagreed. “I think it’s great you have to show your ID,” Stephens said. “I don’t have a problem with it.” Stephens had her driver’s license in hand and her Central State Hospital employee photo ID clipped to her shirt.
