The names were recom

tee made up of Tom Walmer,
Skip Dawkins and Toby Hill
and approved unanimously.
Some may wonder why
the school could not be
named after a noted indi
vidual or local education
leader, when facilities such
as the board of education
central office building, the
theatre at Northside High
School, and most recently,
the Perry High School sta

honor individuals.
The answer is that it is
a matter of board policy.
While some schools have
been named for individu

that new schools would be
given geographic or generic
names.
This is the wording of
the policy adopted by the
Houston County Board of
Education in 1999, which
makes a distinction between
“schools” and “facilities.”
“The authority for
naming schools and facili
ties within the Houston
County School District
shall rest solely with the
Houston County Board of
Education. It shall be the
responsibility of the Board
to assign neighborhood,
geographic, or generic
names to schools.
