Kahne no longer worried about rule change
By Don Coble

LOUDON, N.H. - A week
ago Kasey Kahne needed
help to get into the Chase for
the Championship. He got
it when Tony Stewart fin
ished 18th at the Richmond
International Raceway and
fell out of the top 10 in the
Nextel Cup standings.
Now that he’s qualified to
race for this first champi
onship, Kahne no longer is
worried about the proposed
rule changes for future stock
car playoffs. He’s won more
races than anyone else this
year, but he needed to rally
in the final qualifying race
just to win the final spot in
the Chase.
NASCAR said it will look
at tweaking the Chase next
year. One proposal called for
a possible wild card entry
to the driver with the most
wins. Another called for
more bonus points for race
victories. Now that Kahne
has finally made the cut, he
doesn’t care what the sanc
tioning body does.
“All types of different
things can hurt you, and
a win doesn’t help you as
much as you can get hurt by

other situations, so maybe
10 points, 20 points, I don’t
know,” Kahne said. “I guess
there’s a lot of ways you can
look at it. The way it is right
now, I’m happy we made it in
and weren’t the one with five
wins and missed the Chase.”
Another idea NASCAR is
throwing around is creating a
different point system during
the Chase so qualified drivers
essentially can race against
themselves. Currently, they
still race against other driv
ers, knowing one bad finish
could drop them too deep in
the Chase rankings to recov
er.
Kahne joined Kevin
Harvick, Kyle Busch and Jeff
Burton as first-time Chase
qualifiers this year. Tony
Stewart, Jeremy Mayfield,
Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch
and Ryan Newman both are
missing the Chase for the
first time in the three-year
history of the unique playoff
format. And Matt Kenseth
and Jimmie Johnson remain
the only drivers to compete
in all three Chases.
All 10 drivers were in New
York this week promoting
the playoffs.
