Louis Sands sentenced Darren Cantrell Miller, 23, of Plains to 188 months for intent to distribute more than 5 grams of cocaine and attempted assault on a fed eral officer, and 84 months for carrying a firearm in fur therance of a crime. Miller pleaded guilty to the charges and appeared before the judge on Friday. His legal problems began in June 2005 when agents of the Sumter Drug Task Force raided an Americus house and found ecstasy tab lets, cocaine, marijuana and a handgun. Cantrell agreed to help the agents arrest other drug dealers, but dis appeared after his release. The case was transferred to federal jurisdiction and local and federal authorities located him last September in a Montezuma mobile home. While they attempt ed to arrest him, Cantrell attempted to shoot the fed eral agent, but his revolver misfired four times, officials said. R.E.M. highlights hall inductions ATLANTA (AP) - The four original members of R.E.M. gave a rare performance Saturday night, as the band that launched Athens, Ga. into the spotlight as an inde pendent rock hotbed was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. “This is going to be loud,” lead singer Michael Stipe said as the group, which formed in the college town in 1980, launched into “Begin the Begin” from their 1986 album “Life’s Rich Pageant.” The group, which has won three Grammys and sold over 70 million records, has performed as a quartet only a handful of times since 1997, when drummer Bill Berry left the group after suffering a brain aneurysm onstage in 1995. Saturday’s performance, though, was by far the larg est and the first that had been publicized in advance. The three remain ing members - Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills - have continued to tour and record without naming an official drummer. In their three song set, R.E.M. also per formed their top-ten single “Losing My Religion” and “Man on the Moon,” a song they dedicated to former Texas Gov. Jones Morris News Service COLLEGE PARK - Mark Taylor promised Saturday he would cut $76 million in property tax that the state charges homeowners. For a house valued at $150,000 on the market, that would save the owners $14.50 per year. “When Mark Taylor is gov ernor, there will be no state property tax in Georgia,” he told delegates at the Democrats state_ convention. As he was formally accept ing the Democratic nomina tion for governor that he won in the July 18 primary, Taylor announced he would eliminate the small property tax the state levies on resi dences. The tax, collected by coun ty tax collectors, is 1/4 mill, or 25 cents on SI,OOO of assessed value. Properties in Georgia are assessed at 40 percent of their fair-market value. Taylor’s opponent, Gov. Sonny Perdue announced a tax cut of his own when addressing a Republican fund-raising dinner Wednesday. His $142 million cut would come by eliminating the state income tax on senior citizens. Earlier in the year, he signed into law a GOP bill to exempt seniors from property tax.
